Another few to throw out would be:

Eagles - Desperado

All of Magma's albums

Gong's Radio Gnome Trilogy

And while 2112 was mentioned, the two followups that continued the story line weren't: Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings

2112 and AFTK were not concept albums. Neither was Hemispheres.

"Concept album" requires that the entire album keep in line with the story.

Frownland 08-25-2015 11:22 AM

Anythings a concept album if you think about it hard enough.

No.

Frownland 08-25-2015 11:24 AM

Yes.

I'm guessing you didn't do well in high school English.

Chula Vista 08-25-2015 11:33 AM

Passage to Bangkok has what to do with the song 2112, Einstein?

Or The Trees with the song Hemispheres?

Frownland 08-25-2015 11:35 AM

Enough lateral thinking and it'll happen. Let me look at the lyrics sheet and get back to you.

And Einstein was a scientist, not a literary critic. I wouldn't trust him with the job right off the bat (wouldn't be surprised if he could do it though).

Enough lateral thinking and 4'33 becomes a song. What's your point? Given enough time and leverage, anything can become anything?

I just took a picture of a bear. Look, it's a goat!

Frownland 08-25-2015 11:43 AM

2112 is about planets. The Earth is a planet. Bangkok is a city on Earth. Boom I just found a parrallel, bitch. Concept album.

Also your post above this one implies that you're not too sure what lateral thinking is. Get with the brain stuff, grandpa.

Before you trot in here and whine about my analysis and bring up something off topic, remember that I never claimed that my rationalization for a concept album would be convincing.

That's some proper name dropping right there.

I definitely disagree that an album has to follow a story to be a concept album. I mean Commercial Album by The Residents is a concept album, as the songs are meant to imitate pop structures and be played 3 times to get a full sense of a pop song. It has a strong unifying concept to the way the music on the album is created, without telling a 'story'. A Concept album is more about musical ideas than story lines.

Frownland 08-26-2015 06:52 AM

Speaking of The Residents, they probably my overall favourite concept record.

It's a damn masterpiece. Even Chula admitted to liking it.

High praise indeed.

It actually makes me slightly concerned that I enjoy the album so much.

You might be already dad inside without knowing it.

Whenever my dad joke game is going really strong, in the back of my mind I always wonder if maybe I pulled out too late with someone.

Thanks for your invitation to comment on The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway !

I’m very impressed with this album. Disc one sounds very busy; as if the band members are trying to outdo each other's compositional skills. Although concept albums on this grand ambitious scale are often dismissed as pretentious, Genesis avoid the pitfalls of self-indugence. I loved the synth section of In A Cage, not so sure about Carpet Crawlers though; is it good or irritating?

Predictably, I compared it with the Genesis I know, and I think it’s more complex but also better than Foxtrot and Selling England; Peter G sounds more committed and less patronising which helps make the album sound edgier. Perversly though, if I miss anything from the earlier Genesis, it’s those softer rural/nostalgic/patriotic touches which perhaps annoy non-English listeners. Anyway, I can’t really complain about that on an album about a Puerto Rican in NY. (To date, I’ve just played the album a few times on YouTube; I can’t identify all the tracks individually and haven't yet made it to side four - so if anyone can PM me with something more convenient to listen to, I'd be really grateful. ;))

So, thanks, TH and Chula; I'm very happy to have been prompted into listening to this album. What do you think of it yourselves? Have you tried working out the storyline or is that a waste of time?

Trollheart 08-30-2015 11:09 AM

Will PM you

Lisnaholic 08-30-2015 12:09 PM

^ Thank you so much, Trollheart! That was a quick reponse.:thumb:

I noticed that LLDOB doesn't turn up on the MB Album Review Index, but I'm sure it has been reviewed somewhere here - chances are, in one of your journals, TH!

Anyway, here's another concept album that ocurred to me :-

Sedan Delivery, by Neil Young. It's apparently based on Kerouac's On The Road book, so it's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure that the music itself delivers...

The entire discography of Genesis is pencilled in for November/December --- the last of my three discographies; Tom Waits and Marillion being the other two, and already done --- so expect to see a lengthy review of it there.

Open Mike Eagle - Brick Body Kids Still Daydream

Pretty sure that this beats out The Wall as far as brick-related concept albums go. Lyrically speaking, this album is on a new level, especially with the closing track.

The Wall
The hazards of love
A love supreme
Operation Mindcrime

Yes, Its true!!!

Are you hip to Jpegmafia yet?

To keep it somewhat concept album related, I'll rec Uncommon Nasa's new album Written at Night, which is rad as ****. Ka's Honour Killed the Samurai is cool too.

Best Concept Albums

Yes I did do a search and literally no other thread I found was about the best concept albums. Pretty clear concept so what're your fav concept albums?

My pretty clear fav is Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger. He covered a bunch of old songs, strung them into a story, and made one of the best albums, concept or otherwise, ever made. It's emotional, it's intimate, and it's amazing. Might even be the best country album ever made. Brilliant for "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" if nothing else.

grindy 12-22-2017 01:38 PM

Gotta use every opportunity to rep Kate Tempest.

Well, I'm going through albums for my next journal (top 25 albums of each year). When I was reviewing 1960 I came across this one by Johnny Cash. I won't call this my favorite concept album, but it's pretty damn good.

From Ride This Train by Johnny Cash (1960)

I initially ignored this album for a while because I thought that it was ambient spoken word based on the narrative introductions and I figured it just called itself hip hop instead of spoken word and moved on. Glad you repped it on the forum or I probably wouldn't have given it a full listen as it really is great.

Good to see you being on board.
I won't rest until it's an MB classic.
