Worst Album From Favorite Band?

This might initiate some interesting conversations...

What is the worst album from your favorite band?

Trollheart 06-01-2015 05:04 PM

Easy: Somewhere else by Marillion. I love them but this was such a huge disappointment. Also The X Factor by Iron Maiden. Boo. Maiden without Bruce does not compute!

Machine 06-01-2015 05:40 PM

Candy Cigarettes & Cap Guns by Andrew Jackson Jihad for me I absolutely adore the band and I do love every album, but this album does feel quite unfinished compared to every other album they've ever put out.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Unconditionally Guaranteed

Unconditionally guaranteed to piss off die hard Beefheart fans if you play this album for them. It sounds like an Eagles cover band. ****ing Beefheart. Eagles. ****. Awful.

Sounds like something I should check out!

That's why I recommended that and Bluejeans & Moonbeams when you received Clear Spot somewhat positively.

Norg 06-01-2015 08:33 PM

If there your favorite band I don't think I could say they have a, bad album

Frownland 06-01-2015 08:34 PM

Well not all of us love one dimensional bands. Sometimes those new dimensions don't work out or the old ones get stale.

Korn is def not one dimensional since not one of there albums sounds the same each album is like a different color

Frownland 06-01-2015 08:47 PM

And you like all of those colours?

Ha that's a really weird way to look at it. Like why wouldn't I have a least favorite from my favorite band I mean sure I'll lover them all but there are some I like more than others.

I originally wasn't looking at it this way, but perhaps there are at least two ways you can look at this: 1. worst album of your favorite band (may be good and may be terrible) 2. worst album of one of your favorite bands (maybe your favorite band does not have any bad albums but one of your top five bands has a terrible album). Either way, it makes for an interesting conversation. I am already eager to check out some of the bands and albums you guys posted about on here.

Plainview 06-02-2015 04:25 AM

I love you Bowie but Tonight is ****e.

salvo 06-02-2015 10:24 AM

I love the Pixies, but Indie Cindy was pretty crap. Right down to the name.

Josef K 06-02-2015 12:44 PM

Amazing Grace by Spiritualized is fine but obviously their worst.

YorkeDaddy 06-02-2015 01:32 PM

Well I guess my favorite "band" is The Replacements, and their worst is easily All Shook Down

wait whaaaat? maybe my perspective is different because when I first heard it it was their only album, but I love the sound of candy cigarettes so much more than what their newer work consists of. Granted, I think People That Can Eat People is their best album, and their last three have some incredible moments, some of their best and most fun tracks are on the debut.

Yeah, I think their latest is easily their worst.

Haha I think this has been my longest spell of inactivity. I'm on summer vacation so I found myself lurking around again. I'm doing pretty well, hope the same can be said for yourself!

Velvet Underground - Squeeze
Changing the leader of the band is a serious hit and miss chance, but in this case it was following four seriously great albums led by either Lou Reed and John Cale (first two) or just Reed (S/T and Loaded). Not to dismiss the talents of Doug Yule and understanding the circumstances of how this came to be, it was still like seeing your favorite dark hangout with a strong cult following that kept it in business for years turned into a nice Singer Songwriter place but without the kind of artist that would make it a go-to place. The classic four albums were a tough act to follow!

My Not-So-Obvious pick
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - Blasting Off
This is a case of the band having the original visionary with a whole different line up, recording in LA and trying to keep the name alive. Some decent songs, but the burn out from not having any kind of major hits from their Late 80's albums which seemed to try to break out (Nothing Wrong and the slightly under-valued Blow) resulted in something sounding like things were on Auto-Pilot running low on fuel. In their case, it's another case of a hard act to follow - the classic first two albums and the collection of classic singles sides that burned the house down. I could have said Nothing Wrong for the very foggy production that ruined it (especially the original UK version - the US version added some great songs, but also had a worse sound on all of it to accommodate the weight of material per side which made the songs of the original cut sound worse on the original vinyl pressing!), but this was a case of knowing when to stop (Pre-2K's return).

Musicwhore A-Z 06-04-2015 12:24 PM

The worst album from KISS? Sorry, I'll have to pick three of them ( :D ): 1987's 'Crazy Nights', 1989's 'Hot In The Shade', and 1998's 'Psycho Circus'. ANY of these three could equally pass of as their "worst", to be frank.

TechnicLePanther 06-04-2015 12:56 PM

I'm sorry to say this, but Ummagumma is horrible. You should know the band.

Pretty sure Ummagumma wasn't by The Band...

Frownland 06-04-2015 02:17 PM

It's crazy to me that someone would pick Ummagumma considering that it has an incredible live portion and the fact that Floyd released Wish You Were Here, Momentary Lapse of Reason, Division Bell, and The Endless River.

:nono: Wish You Were Here is in their top 5 for sure.

Led Zeppelin: In Through the Out Door. Plant and Jones' album mostly still Page and Bonham were so out of it by then. Still plenty of great stuff on it though.

Wish you were here? You out of your mind? Endless River is the only correct answer to this.

I love In through the out door but I guess I'm in the minority on that one. I would go with CODA being the worst although to be fair, still a great album.

Exo 06-04-2015 10:16 PM

Tom Waits.

Sorry Tom. Alice just isn't anywhere near the rest of your work. It's really the only album that I sometimes find hard to finish or not put on something else.

Frownland 06-04-2015 10:37 PM

For Waits I would say Nighthawks at the Diner tbh. It's a good album but I feel like it lacks the magic of albums like Closing Time and the zaniness of the bulk of his other material.

I just don't like it, too much of it is very boring. It's mainly Shine On that I'm not huge on, but the other three tracks sound like they could be filler or b side tracks on something way better, which I know Floyd is capable of. There's also the fact that the live half of Ummagumma outweighs the more out there type of stuff on the studio lp.

WYWH is not in my top 5 but still way above any post Roger Waters Floyd. I find Atom Heart mother tough to get into from the Waters era.

I enjoy Atom Heart Mother a lot in fact. Wish You Were Here Though, favorite Floyd record.

I don't consider CODA an official album though. It was only released (3 years after Bonham's death) to fulfill contractual obligations and it contains songs that the band had discarded years earlier.
