Quintessential Listening
What albums do you think that are required listening for someone to call themselves a die hard music fan? It doesn't necessarily have to be albums that the heads like, but albums that are important enough (or should be) in the music world that they warrant at least one listen.
Go! *Disclaimer - If you haven't heard all of the albums posted in this thread you can still consider yourself a die hard music fan so you guys don't have to bitch and moan about elitism. |
Off the top of my head:
Tago Mago In The Court Of The Crimson King Richard D. James Album Madvillainy Naked City The Shape Of Jazz To Come Rain Dogs Pawn Hearts Filosofem Roxy Music The Modern Dance Heroes The Second Annual Report Heresy Kind Of Blue Y Starsailor Fun House Liquid Swords One Size Fits All Electric Ladyland |
^That list makes me hard. Who does Heresy? I'm seeing a few albums with that title.
Some more: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica This Heat - Deceit Lounge Lizards - Voice of Chunk Led Zeppelin - I, IV, and Presence (I'd put their whole discog but those are the real bangers) Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch! Mr. Bungle - Mr. Bungle Electric Wizard - Dopethrone Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians |

I'm not even a huge fan, but it is the go-to album for creepy dark ambient and pretty influential. Forgot all about Deceit, totally agree. Didn't forget about Trout Mask Replica, but it was obvious you'd mention it. Some more: Black One (Sunn O) Gravity (Fred Frith) Symphonie Pour Le Jour Où Brûleront Les Cités (Art Zoyd) Fu****susha (1989) (Fu****susha) (lol at the censorship) Remain In Light (Talking Heads) 6 (Supersilent) Marquee Moon (Television) Third (Soft Machine) Requiem (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) The Four Seasons (Antonio Vivaldi) The Sound Of Perseverance (Death) Obscura (Gorguts) Some Combinations Of Fingers And Passion (Sergey Kuryokhin) Foxtrot (Genesis) Close To The Edge (Yes) Paranoid (Black Sabbath) Into The Everflow (Psychotic Waltz) |
Nice, I'm listening to Obscura right now.
