I probably shouldn't check it out here at work A concert would be awesome and since Juntaro turned out to be alive, there might be a small chance that it might happen. |

But I'm generally pretty relaxed and positive. |
I'm going ahead and continuing with the Merzbox, mainly because I like hearing new music, regardless of the torturous aspect of it. They'll just be sort of subjective. Next thingy up soon.
And, because grindy (I think) asked, I present to you... My Musical Tastes I grew up on The Beatles, started to really get into Pink Floyd later on. I like prog, and can tolerate pretty much anything that has a beat (Merzbox not included). Recently, I've been getting into some more experimental stuff, like Radiohead. I also got into alternative and punk around the same time I found this chart. Already finished jangle pop, and I'm currently starting the No Wave section. I like a lot of stuff though, especially recently. Even some electropop is cool with me (in the vein of Taylor Swift/Katy Perry. I like NiN as well, so there's your range. UPDATE- I've very recently gotten into a bit of electronic and experimental music, mostly as a result of this thread. Minimalism, industrial, krautrock, and the like all fall into that vein. EVEN MORE IMPORTANT UPDATE- I've come to realize that anything you guys send my way, I can come to appreciate. However, the only thing you get is my first listen. So, just know that just because I don't like your album at first, I may come to enjoy it if I decide to give it a relisten (which I often do). |
Based off of that NIN name drop, here's an album of what industrial music sounded like before whiny Reznor watered it down.

If Radiohead is "experimental" to you...well you're in for some interesting times lol

http://undergroundhiphopblog.com/wp-...heuniverse.jpg Album: Masters of the Universe Artist: Binary Star Genre: Alternative Hip Hop Suggested by: DwnWthVwls Familiarity: I've read a bit of the Wikipedia page. Seems like good reviews. 1. Reality Check - Violins? And a lot of sampling. Sounds like something I'll really like. Already getting tingly. The beat is awesome. The samples are pretty well mixed. The rapping rhythm is great, and the DJing is super star. So far, best mixing of any album I've listened to (lol). Hold on, gotta clap to this. Ends like it started, and this album is awesome. Rating: 9.5/10 2. Conquistadors - Pretty similar to the previous track in structure, but it still sounds original. Still vibing to it, and I like the record scratching solo towards the middle. The emphasis on certain words is pretty cool, and these guys have really good beat. The synchronous lyrics are pretty cool. Ends with a return to the original verse. Cool, but not amazing. Rating: 8/10 3. Solar Powered (Intro) - Since it's just an intro to the next song, I'll combine their ratings. Got a sample of an old song played like over radio, and then the actual song begins. 4. Solar Powered - It's got this cool feel to it, and the violins are back. Excellent mixing. The lyrics are pretty good, from what I can hear. The sample is pretty good on this one. Can't say I've ever heard a space rap album. And a cool fade-put at the end. I'm digging it. Rating: 9/10 5. Slang Blade (Intro) - Talking about binary stars. They are "two MC's that revolve around each other." That's how they "shine". 6. Slang Blade - The sampling is good as usual. Once the rapping starts, there's some sort of Middle Eastern music in the background. This one's pretty mellow. Got some mixing at the end. Groovy as heck. Rating: 9/10 7. Binary Shuffle (Intro) - Short, and simple. Sounds like a comedy act. "Shuffling is a sign of defiance!" 8. Binary Shuffle - Cool. Sounds like old hip hop. Got some guys yelling "Oh, yeah!" in between the lyrics. The chorus is "Do the shuffle!" and there's a lot of pop culture references in this one. Got some science stuff in the next verse. These guys are really clever with their lyrics. The bass line presides over this one all the way. The simplicity of the melody allows the lyrics to take over completely. And the lyrics are killer. Rating: 9/10 9. Fellowship - Got some weird sample going on alone in the background in the start. Then a trumpeting chromatic melody for a sample. The samples are great, but they still don't overtake the lyrics. It's great. Bass line is spot on, as are the drums. It's groovy, and just good fun. I feel like it goes on for a little too long at the end though. Not great, but not bad either. Rating: 8/10 10. New Hip Hop - This one feels different, there's constant noise going on in the background. The bass sounds sort of muffled too. Only the drums and the vocals are clear. The mixing is pretty good. Lyrics are still great and unique, but the similarity of all of the songs is starting to break through the cracks. My enjoyment level is slowly waning. It's still good, though, something you might put on the radio, or in the background while doing something else. Rating: 7/10 11. Masters of the Universe - I expect this one to be better, as it's what the album is named after. Another one where they're rapping together. The stereo effect with their voices is pretty good. There's always samples in the back on this one, and the beat seems different from the others. Nothing I'd remember for a long time, but it gained my attention for a bit, so I'm more than satisfied with the song. Rating: 9/10 12. Indy 500 - The intro is pretty cool, ad even a bit creepy. Feels like Bioshock. An interesting song about how many major rap artists were selling out at the time. Pretty good concept, and the piano part in the back is delicate and quiet, and support the depressing mood of the song. The bass line is very unique, and the lyrics are very distinguished and emotional. I love it. Rating: 9.5/10 13. Evolution of Man - Very psychedelic beginning. a bunch of creepy background music, and a harrowing female voice explains the evolution from the standpoint that love is the catalyst. True that. The lyrics agree, and who I can only assume to be the voice from the beginning returns to counter the male rapping in the song. All of the music in the song is perfectly imperfect. It represents love as well as the lyrics. It's absolutely amazing, and definitely beautiful. The lyrics finish the puzzle, and despite some parts that don't quite follow the beat, I'm calling this song perfect. Therefore, if you're reading this, I encourage you to go listen to this song, despite your previous experiences and personal tastes. Rating: 10/10 14. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Part 1) - Despite the fast rapping, this song is relaxing. And relaxing is exactly what I'm gonna do for this one. It's great. Rating: 10/10 15. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Part 2) - Oh, it's good. It's so good. It's relaxing, and beautiful. Slow fade out, and I'm feeling totally refreshed for the rest of the album. Rating: 10/10 16. Honest Expression - After a tiny intro, a dainty sample leads in the song. Another great song, all these guys need is a good sample, and they're off. I'm getting music high. Holy crap, it's brilliant. Everything about this song is great. Not perfect, but still great. 17. Honest Expression (Outro) - A little comedy skit, sounds like. Alright then. Rating: 9/10 18. Glen Close - Very jazzy, this one. Got what sounds like a double bass, and a bit of piano as well. The lyrics represent a clear story. This guy broke up with a woman, and she attacks his new girlfriend for revenge. Pretty good as well. Rating: 9/10 19. Wolfman Jack (Intro) - Some weird thing about banks. I'm into it. It works to break up the tensions. 20. Wolfman Jack - It's a song about werewolves. Jack is a werewolf. It's a creepy, atmospheric song with a constant piano melody. Drunk Ned gets out of the car. Holy crap, he looks back, they're all gone! He's freaked out, and then a werewolf jumps out. Ned freaks and runs away, but it's just a joke. The guy who plays the joke tells his friends they can come out, but they don't. Suddenly, he sees his friends headless in the backseat. Freaky. I love the mood. Great story and song. Rating: 9.5/10 21. One Man Army - Lots of creepy atmospheric stuff in this one. Lots of stuff happening at the same time, and the mixing is awesome. He mentions a bunch of tough guys in pop culture. An Asian dude sometimes is sampled in the background, saying something creepy. Another awesome and atmospheric song. Rating: 9.5/10 22. The KGB (Intro) - Some Russian guy explains Russian Roulette to an American dude. Tells him to play. It's pretty tense, and then we hear a gunshot. "HA HA, YOU LOSE!" Pretty funny intro. 23. The KGB - The sample on this one seems to be of a Russian chorus. The beat put over the chorus lays an excellent backdrop for the lyrics, which, as you might expect, are about the KGB. The song is pretty dramatic, and when combined with the intro, it creates an awesome atmosphere. The song itself is pretty long, but it doesn't ever get stale. It's an absolutely amazing finale. Rating: 10/10 24. Album Outro - Great. Only ten seconds, so no rating, but it sums up the album perfectly. You have to listen to it to understand. Good job. The album is absolutely fantastic. It does get a bit boring at one point, as it seems to be repeating the same song over and over at that point. However, because of the quality of the rappers, and the mixing, this is overall a great album. I will almost definitely be giving it a second listen. OVERALL RATING: 9/10 |
So, I got two albums from Japan, and another by an asian-american. Hmm.

Get ready for part 2!
http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/50...c+Music+02.jpg Album: Metal Acoustic Music Artist: Merzbow Genre: Noise Suggested by: grindy Familiarity: Did a bit of research in the meantime, and after hearing some of his other songs, I'm a bit scared. There's only one song, and it's called Balance of Neurosis. So, I'm gonna just lob all of this into one. Here it goes: Heard the first ten seconds and paused. I just can't do this anymore. Nah, jk. It actually sounds pretty cool. Let me guess, this is the entire album. There's basically a bunch of tapping noises. And that's about it, besides some guitar. Exciting... Alright, gonna try to condense this into ten minutes. Alright, skip. Wait, what's happening... Am I... enjoying this? Yeah, actually. This is some cool stuff. Maybe it's just that listening to so much prog has desensitized me to random noise going on forever. This is the kind of stuff you trip too. Lots of guitar in there. I think if you can tolerate sitting down for 40 minutes, or if you have nothing better to do, you might enjoy listening to this album. It's certainly not boring, and there's some weird beautiful attraction to it. Can't wait for his "doom metal" phase. Alright, this song is really weird, but it's also pretty dang cool. Fun. Funfunfunfunfunfunfunfun. FUNFUNFUBNFUNFUNFUN!FUN!FUN!FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! Alright, I'm just typing random s*** at this point. You have to sort of zone out and not pay attention to it- WTF is that?!!!?! Is that... Merzbow? Alright, so now he's rambling into a mic. There is something good about this, but I can't really pinpoint it. Gotta just be the mixing. It's mixed so well. Anyways, it's really just guitar and random noise. There's no other way to describe this album. Listen to it if you like experimental rock or noise rock. You'll probably enjoy it. For me, it's a OVERALL RATING: 7/10 |

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/319B19FP8KL.jpg Album: Crying Over Pros for No Reason Artist: edIT Genre: Glitch Suggested by: EPOCH6 Familiarity: Absolutely none. Haven't even ever heard any glitch, so going in completely blind. 1. Ashtray - Starts with a bunch of random clicking. Well, it has a beat, so it's gotta be good. There's a lot of effects and noise going on, but I'm into it. A simple beat and guitar riff tie everything together. This is some of the coolest stuff I've ever heard. It's incredibly well mixed. I can tell there was a lot of work put into this. Sounds a bit like Aphex Twin. It's really cool. Definitely memorable. Great opening track. 2. Ants - Very sudden change. More guitar work, got some violin this time. The production quality is incredible for a first release. It's really cool and mellow. About equivalent to the previous track, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Very atmospheric. A bit of talking parts in between the segments of the song. 3. Laundry - This time it's bass instead of the guitar. A lot more focused on the glitching, rather than instrumentation. It's different, but it's still cool. I wouldn't say it's as good as the other two though. I like the diversity in the tracks. 4. Situps Pullups - Bass is already playing a more prominent role here. There's also some keyboard. The glitching is still good as well. Overall, pretty good. The good thing about the album is that it's easy for people who aren't into the genre to get into it. And boy, am I getting into it. 5. Dex - The audio is very electronic this time. Seems like no acoustics at all. Not to say that detracts a whole ton. Not much is happening at the start. Then it blows up a bit. A electronic-sounding female voice comes in, and the glitching runs rampant throughout the song. All the while, a simple counter melody runs in the background. There's a bit of a quiet part, and then the glitching comes back in full force. The female voice also returns. 6. Twenty Minutes - It's not actually twenty minutes. Anyways, this one's cool. The glitching never gets old. The melody is sweet. More awesome stuff. 7. Screening Phone Calls - Weird Name ? Weird Song. The ultimate question. It appears so. Mellow, and sweet. It's so cool. It appears weird name = weird song. 8. Mop Head - Another strange name. Starts really mellow, and then the glitching begins. Not much else to say. It's a good song. 9. LTLP - More glitching, another cool backdrop, another good song. Not as good as some others though. 10. Mildew - I expect a little something more from the final song. Let's see if it lives up to my expectations. The guitars are back. Absolutely awesome effect with the reverb. No glitching at all. Definitely something very different for the end. But I like it! Alright, this album was pretty darn amazing. I was expecting something a bit worse, and a bit more hectic, but instead, I got a mellow, and well produced album. This one's definitely my favorite out of the ones I've done so far. OVERALL RATING: 9.5/10 |
Well if you're interested in hearing something experimental then; as my submission, try out Self Spiller's album Worms in the Keys. Here's the bandcamp link to the album where all the songs from it can be streamed.

By the way, I've decided to listen to albums I've already heard as well, just as a refresher. I won't listen to albums I've already done on here, however. I will be suggesting some albums to myself (sort of weird), just so I can re-listen to some albums I haven't heard in a while. My recommendations will have the same rules applied to them as everyone else's. |
Gonna try and finish this one tonight.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Absolutego.gif Album: Absolutego Artist: Boris Genre: Drone Metal Suggested by: The Batlord Familiarity: None. 1. Absolutego - Droning. Droning. Droning and droning and droning. Then heavy distortion. Yup. It's definitely Japanese metal. Anyways, it gets pretty heavy. But as with any hour-long song, there's not much to it. Can't say I enjoy it that much. Towards the middle, it gets a bit sludgy. Eww. But as long as you're fine getting dirty, there's nothing wrong with it. It's not incredibly great musicianship, but I think it's pretty great that a few people sat down in a room for an hour and just played music. That's dedication. It's not terribly boring either, so if you're into sludge, you might like the middle part. And then, droning and droning and droning. The high pitch lowers a bit, and after another 30 seconds, it's over. Alrighty then. It's not really any good unless you decide to skip a few parts, so, overall, not very good. OVERALL RATING: 4/10 Alright, go for it, Batty. |
Sweet.
Now I'm gonna rec Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass. |
NEXT!
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61HNmpPlzPL.jpg Album: Berlin Artist: Lou Reed Genre: Art Rock Suggested by: Plainview Familiarity: Pretty much none. I've heard of Lou Reed, that's it. 1. Berlin - Great intro. Lyrics are pretty non-general, the noise in the beginning is cool, but the piano is the highlight. Already loving it. 2. Lady Day - Picks up this time, and sounds like a bit of a concept album. Lyrics are alright, they give me an image, at least. The orchestral accompaniment is great. Seems like this may have inspired some other albums. I like the marching beat. 3. Men of Good Fortune - Am I listening to The Wall now? Lyrics are depressingly harsh, but I love it. Has a hard rock feel, and it's good. 4. Caroline Says I - Caroline sounds like a jerk. I like the melody. Despite all these songs being pretty hard for the time, they all feel like soft rock. A bit proto-punkish too. The speed of the ending is pretty cool. 5. How Do You Think It Feels - This one is a bit too simple compared to the other songs. Nevermind, the guitar is good. Alright, it's good once it starts picking up. 6. Oh, Jim - One right into another. This one feels like it belongs in the early 80s. Whatever. I don't like it as much as the other ones. I think the issue is that it's not particularly anything. It's just sort of... rock. Well, whatever. The solo is good, but also pretty generic. It picks up at the end, which is good for this album. Just Lou and a guitar at the end. It's good in its simplicity. A lot of different parts to this song. I think it comes out on top in the end. 7. Caroline Says II - Quiet and brooding in the start. Pretty good. Then the violins start, and it instantly becomes the best song on the album. Lou Reed's voice doesn't really fit with the music, I think, but it's still a great song. 8. The Kids - Good melody. It sounds very happy, but the lyrics are about Social Services taking away a woman's children away, presumably Caroline. Sounds like she's a bit of a drug and sex addict. The guitar is mellow, and leads the listener into a sense of false security. Lou is eerie on this one, point fingers and making little insults about her. It's one of those songs that sounds happy, but is actually really horrible. Oh my gosh, there's a child crying at the end. I'm not really sure what to think about this one. It's alright. 9. The Bed - Another guitar song. Still sounds happy, but still creepy and depressing also. This is really depressing. But I like it better than the last couple of songs too. Caroline is cutting herself, and everybody's unhappy. Background singers really create a strange atmosphere towards the end. Sounds like Gregorian chanting. This is some pretty weird stuff. 10. Sad Song - Bad title. Seems like the dark and scary bit is over. Flutes lead in the song. And a full orchestra and a band accompanies Lou's vocals. This is awesome. So, the main character decides he's gonna get on with his life. Everything is very atmospheric and great. Especially the "Sad Song" chorus. Amazing finale. The album was a bit hard to get into, but once I did, I was carried on an amazing journey. The lyrics are great, the music is great, and everything's pretty grand and awesome. So, despite the faltering towards the beginning, it's a great album overall. OVERALL RATING: 8/10 |
It's a 1-2 Punch!
http://cdn.albumoftheyear.org/album/...ody-nelson.jpg Album: Histoire de Melody Nelson Artist: Serge Gainsbourg Genre: French Rock Suggested by: YorkeDaddy Familiarity: I've read what it's about, as I assume it's in French, and I won't understand a word of it. 1. Melody - The bass is awesome, the drums are awesome, the guitar is awesome, and the guy's voice work is amazing. It's mixed pretty well too.. And now there's some orchestral elements as well. The song slowly picks up and rises to a fever pitch. Towards the end it sounds like an alternative rock song with violins, cellos, and double basses. I love it. 2. Ballade de Melody Nelson - This one reflects the first song, but it's shorter And it's very good as well. 3. Valse de Melody - It definitely feels like a Waltz. A greater emphasis on the strings is definitely good. Great way to mix it up. 4. Ah! Melody - Another great, but short song. So far, this is a near-perfect one. 5. L'hotel particulier - Funkier from the get-go. Every time it starts getting formulaic, there's a little piano trill, or violin melody (lol) to mix things up. It's so, so good. 6. En Melody - A bit of hard rock here. The drums are a bit more frenetic this time, and the fast-pace is a welcome change. First song without actual lyrics, but there are some suggestive yelps thrown in there (basically implying this is a sex song (read the Wikipedia for context)). Alright, it's pretty good. Wind blows at the end. 7. Cargo culte - Last song, and it mirrors the first. It's great. Not exactly like the first song, so it is unique. It's a great song, especially because there are some choral bits in this one. Awesome. If you can tolerate not quite understanding the lyrics, and are just listening for some good music in the vein of Funkadelic and the like, you'll really enjoy this one. I know I did. OVERALL RATING: 9/10 Now, lemme have that album of yours. I'm very excited about it! |
Glad you liked it! One of the most awesome foreign albums I've ever heard.
