Default My Musical Heritage: I was born in XXXX....

Quote:
Here's the rules.

1. Replies must begin with: I was born in (year you were born)
2. Try to keep it succinct.
3. End with: These days....

That is all.
I was born in 1960. Came of age with a backdrop of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, American Bandstand, and Motown. Lots of Motown. BLAM! Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple. Spent most of the 70s sucking up what's now considered Classic Hard Rock. Latter 70s was all about progressive and fusion - Yes, Genesis, Mahavishnu, Dixie Dregs, etc. Got sucked into the 80s guitar god stuff via Malmsteen, Satriani, and Vai. Life then gets in the way and new music takes a back seat.

These days I'm just trying to suck up some of the ****e MB members suggest, like:

This Town Needs Guns
Strapping Young Lad
Sufjan Stevens
Death Grips

(PS Thread is dedicated to Frownland. I want to know how a kid born in 1994 has such a diverse, and highly weird, sense of musical tastes.)

I was born in 1994. I grew up on all of your standard rock and metal groups along with a bunch of the nu metal and post grunge that was coming out at the time (thanks dad). I started getting very interested in music at age 5 and was a metal head up until I was around 14, where I found Frank Zappa and Beefheart. Then it all went downhill as I started getting more and more into the weird stuff. Got around my aversion to hip hop and it was implemented into my musical diet when I was around 18.

These days I'll listen to anything that's pushing boundaries. A couple of more recent additions to my favourites are
Jim O'Rourke
Richard Dawson
Matana Roberts
Billy Woods
Bill Orcutt

It's a very easy thread to understand.

It's basically the "evolution of your taste" thread, with the year of birth added, so we don't forget that Chula is kinda old.

FIFY.

Listened to Zoot Allures last night for what it's worth.

Not yet. Are you? I was just curious if you had heard it before since I know you've heard some Zappa but not that many people have heard his whole discog.

To answer this, it all kind of started when I did a lot of drugs in high school and wanted to find the craziest **** out there to trip out my friends. Then I started listening to that music while sober and it snowballed from there. I also will give most anything a shot these days, since I've been getting better at appreciating music in all forms. I just take whatever recommendations from last.fm or RYM or music blogs sound the most interesting and add them to the database. I highly doubt that my tastes would be anywhere near the same if I had grown up before the internet tbh.

Frank is wailing on Black Napkins at the moment.

Zappa's been essential listening since Hot Rats for me. Joe's Garage V1 maybe being his best realized work on a whole. (hate V2 and V3 BTW)
