Bands with appropriate (or inappropriate) names

A lot of bands don't, but there are some who when you hear their name you can kind of picture either what they're going to look like or sound like, or what they stand for, and if you didn't know the genre they operate in you could probably guess from their name.

Who do you think fits this bill?

For me, you know what to expect, even if you've never heard the bands, when you hear these names:
Slayer
Motorhead
Black Sabbath
Manowar
Cannibal Corpse
Iron Maiden (yeah they're all working out as metal bands so far aren't they?)
Twisted Sister

What about the reverse?

You hear Styx for the first time, probably thinking of doom or death metal (if you know your Greek mythology) but no, a pomp/AOR band

Can't think of any others at this hour at the moment...

Appropriate
Deströyer 666—These guys sound almost exactly how you think they'd sound: rowdy metal.
Charlie Hunter Trio—Is a jazz trio. Surprise, surprise.

Inappropriate
Massive Attack—They sound like they'd be very in-your-face and aggressive rather than the chilled out, atmospheric band that they are.
Bohren & der Club of Gore—I would expect something avant-garde, violent and provocative, rather than the ultra-minimalistic jazz they play.

Inappropriate

Tony Danza Tap Dancing Extravaganza - It's not a sexy Italian guy tap dancing I'll tell you that much.

And yet it still somehow suits their sound.

Inappropriate: The Pop Group. But that's kind of the point.

Also Swans. But that too is the point.

I think all of these bands are deceiving.

Onyx
Shit Robot
Star Fucker

Cheap Girls (they're an all male band)

How is Onyx deceptive?

The Girls are boys.
So confusing.

OakEar 07-20-2015 02:41 AM

Sex Pistols can be considered an inappropriate name with how much sex is a taboo in America.

Your america bashing desires seem to interfere with yout OP reading abilities.

Trollheart 07-20-2015 05:29 AM

@ Jansz, you're right about Massive Attack. I would have thought either Public Enemy (?) style in-your-face rap/hip-hop/gtfo my face, or death metal or grindcore, something like that.

@ Frown: Probably the best one yet! :thumb: (The Pop Group I mean)

Some more inapt ones:
Texas (they're from Scotland, ye ken?)
Deacon Blue (um...)
Diablo Swing Orchestra (they don't swing and they ain't an orchestra. Well....)
Van Halen (I doubt Sammy Hagar ever drove a van in his life!) ;)
Rob Zombie (to my knowledge, he's never been killed and therefore cannot legitimately claim to be one of the undead...)

Is this fair, considering he/she has one post? Can one post be considered America bashing? Or do you know this poster from another forum? Just asking, as it seems a bit of a leap to a conclusion based on a single post.

Sure it can.
But I have to admit that I haven't noticed that it's the users first post, might have reacted differently then.

Well, "Death to America!" could be a one-post America bash, or a long diatribe about the USA but I just think one sort of oblique reference does not qualify. If it develops along those lines I think you would be justified yes, but otherwise I'd just hold back and see what happens. Don't want to scare away the newbs on account of one thing they said that might have been taken up wrongly.

It doesn't make me think hardcore gangster rap.

It's not like I insulted the user's mom. He/she'll be fine.
And if such a minor quip would somehow be too scary and unpleasant, then I don't think this forum would be the right place anyway.

Onyx is hard and black. Seems fitting to me.

Ninetales 07-20-2015 09:16 AM

always thought ...and you will know us by the Trail of Dead sounded like an obnoxious post rock band name

Ja I find these ones pretty appropriate tbh. One uses the names of the members and the other thematically fits the music.

Reading these makes me think: what would you call your band, Trollheart. I'm sure your thought process on it is as confusing as it is interesting.

I believe I would call it We Are Not A Band. or maybe They're Not A Band. I like the idea of anyone saying "Who are you going to see?" and the reply ebing "They're Not A Band", followed by "What are they then?" Oh, hilarity ensues!
