K', maybe it's a bit my fault, to be honest, i wasn't interested in Pere ubu until yesterday so i might have overlooked some post about them..

I know what you said... I was just teasing you. ;)

I did recognize that 1st song from the Rocket from the tombs vid, Sonic reducer. I didn't know who played it though.

Not my fault, i blame you Pere ubu fans who constantly praise them but hardly ever post their songs.

Don't forget their early singles. They're not as self-consciously experimental as their later work, but "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" is one of the best songs ever recorded. Check out Terminal Tower: An Archival Collection for that ****.

Pere Ubu are actually half of Rocket from the Tombs. The good half. The half that didn't form the Dead Boys. **** the Dead Boys.

Black Francis 12-06-2015 06:30 PM

Good song. i can't believe that right up till yesterday i thought Pere Ubu was a brazilian jazz singer.

Dumbass. And did you ever figure out how to download those comics? I could try to upload my Grant Morrison Batman comics to my Mediafire account for you if you still can't get those links working. And yes, I do have them all (although I might have to download Arkham Asylum, as I don't know if I have it on my computer since I actually have a physical copy).

Black Francis 12-06-2015 06:59 PM

i might have to take you up on that offer..

Gimme some time. I got a Mediafire account, but I haven't touched it in forever.

Edit: Alright, apparently I can only upload 300 files at a time, so this is gonna have to be in installments, and I don't know if I have enough bandwidth or whatever to upload the whole thing, so I might have to **** with Zippyshare or whatever.

Culture Shock 12-10-2015 11:10 AM

I always start at the beginning.

Culture Shock 12-10-2015 11:10 AM

Unless of course starting in the middle makes more sense.

1) Buy your chosen artist's Greatest Hits/Best Of collection.
2) See which original album your favourite track(s) from that Greatest Hits album originally appeared on.
3) Buy that album.
4) If you like that album, buy the one issued before it and the one issued after it.
5) Repeat this process till you've purchased two albums in succession that you don't like.
6) Return to (1) with a different artist.

Zhanteimi 12-18-2015 03:29 AM

TV on the Radio.

Super Furry Animals.

I listened and thought, yeah they're pretty good. But **** em. Too late to catch up on a bunch of albums that kinda all sound the same, and that being a sound that's not really something I go crazy about.

I know you'll agree that any Residents fan needs Renaldo and the Loaf

Frownland 01-25-2016 11:21 AM

Yes, Songs for Swinging Larvae is tops (for beginners, at least).

I totally forgot about Not Available. That would've topped the list.

Best Starting Places for Bands? Ask Here

OK, this thread is for people who want to know what a good starting place for getting into a band is so they can get into them. Anyone can answer. A good example of this is how I couldn't get into After the Gold Rush by Neil Young, so I started getting into Neil Young through Harvest and On the Beach. If you've been in a situation like that, feel free to ask.

I started this thread because I have one: best starting place for Melvins. I'm very new to sludge, so what's the best start? Houdini? Lysol? Bullhead?

After this, anyone can ask anything. I'll answer when I can

Frownland 03-18-2016 10:49 AM

We've got one already

JGuy Grungeman 03-18-2016 10:51 AM

OK. Melvins for me. I've heard songs, but never full albums. Don't ask me what songs I've heard. Only one I know the name of is Hooch.

Houdini was a great starting place for me, it has a good mix of what the Melvins do. The first side of the album is very approachable and chocked full of singles, primes you for the stranger songs and albums that follow. From there I'd go to Stoner Witch and then backwards to their self-titled '92 album.

EPOCH6 03-18-2016 11:10 AM

I'm diving into Van Morrison's mountain of alleged masterpieces for the first time today. I've got Astral Weeks, Moondance, His Band & the Street Choir, Tupelo Honey, and Saint Dominic's Preview ready to go. It's a beautiful sunny day out, first in a long time, so I'm hoping to prime myself with his more upbeat, freewheelin', and rock oriented albums before diving into Astral Weeks which is apparently widely regarded as one of the most influential albums in the history of pop music, but I've heard it's quite an emotional head trip, I want to save it for the right morning.

So my blueprint for taking on Van Morrison in the most approachable and optimistic way possible:

1st, Moondance
2nd, His Band & the Street Choir
3rd, Tupelo Honey
4th, Saint Dominic's Preview
5th, Astral Weeks

Somebody that knows Van's catalog please correct my order if it seems off, or add any of his more upbeat work that I may have missed.

Houdini and Stoner Witch for a good taste of what you're getting into

Bullhead or Gluey Porch Treatments for maximum sludge

A Senile Animal for maximum psych

Electroretard/Prick/Honky for maximum experimental-ness

What are some of the quintessential albums to get started?

This is a super incomplete list. Pretty much every artist on here has much more worth listening to and I'm missing a lot of essential artists. In rough order.

Sam Cooke: Live at the Harlem Square Club
Otis Redding: Otis Blue
Marvin Gaye: What's Going On
Gil Scott-Heron: Pieces of a Man
Curtis Mayfield: Curtis
Aretha Franklin: Lady Soul
James Carr: You Got My Mind Messed Up
Syl Johnson: Is It Because I'm Black
Millie Jackson: Caught Up
Al Green: Let's Stay Together
William Bell: The Soul of a Bell

Super Furry Animals: This is a tough one because, as you say, they're very consistent. I think I could probably say any of their first six, but I'd start with the debut, Fuzzy Logic, and Rings Around the World. Maybe Radiator.

TVOTR: I used to be pretty into them. I would go with the Young Liars EP and Dear Science (my favorite, and I think the one you'd like the most), but I think Return to Cookie Mountain is their most popular.

Make sure to listen to Veedon Fleece. Quieter than most of the stuff on your list but IMO his best album - it's maybe less peppy than most of what you're already listening to, but I would say a lot of it is pretty happy. If you like Astral Weeks you should like it, and even if you don't like Astral Weeks - I think it's fine but not great - you might like it anyway.

Where do I start with Prince? I know and love a couple of singles, but that's about it. Now that his stuff's on Spotify, I thought I'd spin an album.

Lucem Ferre 02-24-2017 09:26 PM

With most artists I usually listen to albums in Chronological order. It's like reading a book series to me. I like hearing the growth and the story of their art.

Purple Rain is the popular choice. May do that myself actually.
