The MB rateyourmusic Thread

This is something I haven't seen around here and I don't really understand why, I assume quite a few of us have accounts, so why not make a thread dedicated to sharing our profiles and get quick recs from eachother by seeing what people have been digging recently. I don't know it could be fun.

To get things started here's my profile...
https://rateyourmusic.com/~ifyoucanhandleit

(Also if this already has a thread just lock this one)

Norg 11-10-2015 05:37 PM

i already rated all my music on my iTunes with the 5 star system yeah took forever

sidewinder 11-10-2015 06:37 PM

I use the site a lot - primarily for cataloging, and secondarily for rating. I catalog what I own and what I stream as well (identified as wish list items), so it's also kind of a listening/discovery history.

Same here, I wouldn't remember what I've listened to without it. Plus seeing what different people listen to, who love music as much as I do is always fun.

grindy 11-11-2015 06:59 AM

I don't have an account and I don't usually like reviewing and rating stuff, but the site is great for discovering music, so thanks to everyone who bothers to make lists, rate and review.

i primarily use this as a resource for up coming albums.....i really need to go through and re-rate my collection

I rate random songs/albums there. Not really a reviewer, just give some brief comments.

http://www.rateyourmusic.com/~asformyself

This is my catalog of albums I own. I don't take the ratings too seriously on here as opposed to my other account.

Goofle 11-11-2015 07:50 AM

https://rateyourmusic.com/~Goofle

I've slowed down my usage of the site recently and usually spend about an hour on last.fm scrolling back through my listening history adding in albums in huge batches. But yeah, brilliant site and one I would recommend.

I did actually start making a list of MB members on there, and I'll use this thread to help complete it if enough people add their names.

Frownland 11-11-2015 08:03 AM

I can see how it'd be useful to keep a catalog of all the **** you listen to, but I never had that much follow through with my account.

Why have two separate accounts? Just curious.

It's fun for me, I don't know why. I'm obsessed with rating albums.

I keep my physical catalog account as a personal account. Not adding random people, posting to forums, or writing actual reviews.

The a4m account is for actual reviews and forum presence. I also try to take the ratings a bit more seriously as opposed to my catalog account, which is mostly full of albums I already like. I just prefer it separated.

I think RYM is like my most visited webpage at the moment. It's just easier to channel my opinions through a 5 star system then talk about them.

Here's a link to my account

https://rateyourmusic.com/~mankycaaant

Goofle 11-12-2015 11:18 AM

^ Nice seeing you around these parts again. Your RYM reviews (that I've seen) are pretty great, though we disagree on TPAB :)

14232949 11-12-2015 11:25 AM

Thanks man, gonna try and pop by a bit more from time to time.

yeah, massively it would seem.

Can see why people are turned off Kendrick now that he's went into full preacher mode. But for me, we haven't seen a trio of hip hop records of this consistent quality ever, I don't think it's too early to proclaim his the GOAT.

Out of interest what is it you dislike about TPAB? The rapping, production, content, length?

Goofle 11-12-2015 12:04 PM

I would link you to my review of it, but it was half joking, so there's not much point (on RYM if you wanna look anyway). But my main issue is how boring some of the tracks are. I disliked/was completely meh about every track from Institutionalized to Hood Politics. I didn't really care for the message (interest wise, not the content), and the way it was delivered. Annoying voices etc.

Side note: Nice to know Bieber has gone a lang way to prove you (or us) right about him. making some pretty good music right now. Listening to the album now.

14232949 11-12-2015 02:57 PM

Saw the review, yeah. I guess I sorta see it more as an overall project rather than a sum of its parts. There's definitely some wtf moments in there, I mentioned that in my review too. I think things like that odd diatribe about Michael Jackson being innocent and the 'couldn't try less if he wanted to' Snoop Dogg verse had no business being in there.

That's what stopped it being as good as GKMC, but I know you're not too fond of that one either.

Yeah, it's interesting that even the casual fans have warmed up to him, they're a little like minor racists

"I'm not racist but...

"I hate Bieber but that new song..."

Think we're still a few years from a complete breakthrough but might well give his album a shot too, at least to pad out my Top 50 list if nothing else.

YorkeDaddy 11-12-2015 05:47 PM

Bieber's new album is honestly shockingly good

Anyway it's been a long ass time since I updated this and there's probably a ton of albums that would get different ratings now, but it's still fun. I got those 1,000+ albums in there during like a two-day binge in the middle of summer last year lol

You should update your collection of listens.

Pet_Sounds 11-12-2015 08:23 PM

Is there a way to basically clear everything? I'd like to start fresh, but I like my username.

https://rateyourmusic.com/~Harpsichord

Goofle 11-12-2015 08:30 PM

https://rateyourmusic.com/collection...chord/r0.5-5.0

I got to that via my own profile and edited in your username. I'm guessing nobody could actually edit it on your behalf though.

Pet_Sounds 11-12-2015 08:42 PM

Awesome! Thanks, Goofle.

sidewinder 11-12-2015 10:24 PM

I also enjoy making lists on RYM. It's not just a list, albums or artists are linked to an actual database with information (ratings, reviews, genres, labels, etc.)

I spend a ton of time on the site. When I hear of an album or band, it's usually my first stop before I even check Amazon for audio samples.

sidewinder 11-23-2015 05:33 PM

RYM has just launched a campaign to help fund the next generation sites, with some major improvements to RYM.

I donated $50 this morning because it's one of my most-visited sites. Find out more and donate (perks available):

Help us launch the next generation of media discovery.
Sonemic, Cinemos, and Glitchwave are three new websites focused on discovering music, films, and video games. These sites are the next generation of Rate Your Music. Collectively, they are named the Sonemic network.

...

For those who already use Rate Your Music regularly, you will love these new sites. We've listened to your feedback and have been working on the most requested improvements, including the addition of 7 of the 10 most requested features.

The final step of launching the Sonemic network is building servers and infrastructure, contracting some non-development tasks, and committing to a final development cycle. This last phase requires a considerable amount of money to put everything into place, and we need your help! Please consider being a part of our launch by giving in this campaign.

Sonemic is the next version of Rate Your Music, and incorporates over 200 improvements requested by members.

Cinemos takes the "film beta" from RYM and expands it into a full-featured site with the same improvements found in Sonemic.

Glitchwave is a brand new site focused on building a comprehensive video game database.

This sounds amazing, I might have to scrape up some some money and donate.

innerspaceboy 11-23-2015 07:44 PM

RYM is essential to my new music discovery process. The site is indispensable.

UPDATE: I've just finished re-cataloging my top 360 LPs on the site, give or take a few rare issues for which I'll have to create new entries. You can find me here: https://rateyourmusic.com/~innerspaceboy

Also really looking forward to the Sonemic project they're working on.

I think you might still have it on private or something, gives me a 404 error and says owner has removed it or made it private.

It works for me now, nvmd.

Yes, because last.fm officially sucks and won't scrobble any of my tracks.

Nice, I've been using RYM ever since last went to **** a year ago. It'll be nice to have another person on there I know.

innerspaceboy 01-11-2017 05:50 PM

This thread reminded me to manually enter all of my Discogs.com purchases from the last 6 months into RYM. But every time I set myself to this task (routinely a few times a year), I encounter the same problem - the RYM database with regard to specific pressing data is leagues behind Discogs, and I can't find existing entries for nearly half of the LPs I purchase.

I know the expectation is that I take the time to build entries each time this happens, but it seems like a waste when Discogs already has a detailed profile for every LP I own.

I'll always go to RYM first when researching the history of a genre. That's where it really excels. But for cataloging, Discogs beats RYM hands down. And the recently-launched official Discogs app makes it even easier to manage or reference my library while I'm out crate digging in the wild.
