What's your music main squeeze...obligatory side pieces allowed!

I'm Hip-Hop Homework--nice to meet y'all's acquaintance!!

Soooo, everybody has a preferred genre of music...like your go-to or the genre that comprises the bulk of your collection because it just happens to be your favorite (generally). This is what you call your music main squeeze.

Then you have all your mistresses, lovers, side chicks, etc.

For me--my main squeeze is hip-hop, but I've been cheating on her a lot with hard rock and lotsa EDM (mostly dubstep) but some bubblegum poppy stuff too.

For example...I've been listening to a lotta Papoose but had Flosstradamus' "Total Recall" (samples Dutch Master's "Recalled To Life") and Sia's "Elastic Heart" in heavy, HEAVY rotation lately.

Today I discovered Margaux - Eyes On You (find the version that has no vocals and is basically like a 4-minute fleshing out of the introductory riff section of the official song. IT'S NASTY! It's Punk Rock...

I'ma music lover period tho. I can enjoy music from ANY genre, except caustic stuff with no melody (think die antwoord) but if there's melody and rhythm to it, there's a chance I could like something from it.

So with all that out of the way, long story short:

Hip-Hop's my main squeeze and my regular mistresses are various Rock pieces, lotsa EDM, and the occasional pop-tart song.

What are y'all's? Feel free to list any recommendations for others. I'll check back for anything I don't recognize from my favorite genres.

Zhanteimi 12-15-2015 06:59 PM

My main squeeze is good music, regardless of genre. I kick bad music to the curb.

outta all the pretty girls at the dance we call music...there's gotta be one you dance with the most. Don't be shy...it can be big bertha. All that matters is that she's the prettiest girl IN YOUR MIND!!!

haha

I like your mentality tho...

I bet your report cards as a kid always had that teacher comment "participates in class but DOES NOT FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!"

just ball bustin' and hope you gotta chuckle out of it...don't mean no harm by it.

Zhanteimi 12-15-2015 07:15 PM

Dude, seriously. I listen to my albums in alphabetical order because I don't play favorites. If I like it, it goes in rotation. If I don't like it, it gets deleted.

TechnicLePanther 12-15-2015 07:19 PM

I'm a devout mormon. Prog rock, Alt Rock, Punk Rock, and Ambient Electronic are my mains. Recently been incorporating a bit of Metal on the side.

Tristan_Geoff 12-15-2015 08:02 PM

My main genre would be punk and it's affiliates: post-hardcore, garage, and skate particularly get most of my listening time. My secondary loves are, of course, doom/stoner/sludge metal, blues, and indie/college rock. I've been trying to get more into experimental stuff and post-punk recently, as those were always genres I didn't delve as far as I wanted to in.

Look at the link in my sig for the whole story.

bro (assuming)...you have listed so many niche genres. I'm sure I've heard music of the like but damm it if I'm uneducated in all the minutiae that distinguishes one subgenre from another.

brostep? doom metal?

That's why I never got caught up in all the hype of labels...the details get lost in translation. These days, you gotta have a Ph.D. just to keep up...crazy!

I saw you like a li'l bit of everything tho so it's pretty safe to say you're a music lover period!! Kudos--me too!

I think it's smart that you posted your tastes in your sig too...might have to copy you "li'l brother following you like a shadow" style.

It gets easier the more you hear, you start to notice similarities between songs. Of course, some of my favorite artists are the oddballs who can't really be classified well under an existing genre tag.

Edit: And yeah, I'm a dude.

Cool, though I'm pretty sure I got my cue from everyone else using their Rate Your Music/Last FM pages, and my current lack thereof. But nice to help you out anyways.

The Identity Matrix 12-15-2015 08:31 PM

Well my "main squeeze" as you call it would probably be Alternative/Indie Pop, Heavy Metal (many sub genres too many to list), Rock in general (too many sub genres to list) and Electronica (once again too many sub genres). My side pieces would be hip hop and jazz.

I just listen to a whole plethora of musical styles to keep variety in my musical experiences.

onlyalice 12-15-2015 09:06 PM

My general thing is Hard Rock/Metal, in it's most vague terminology. Stuff like Mastadon, Alice in Chains (new stuff), Black Water Chemistry, Devin Townsend. But then stuff like Pearl Jam and all that good stufff.

DwnWthVwls 12-15-2015 09:28 PM

HipHop, but my favorite artist is Florence and the Machine. :X

I love having a nice variety though, rap is just the go to when I can't decide.

Norg 12-15-2015 10:02 PM

my man squeeze is Prob Hard rock Alt Rock

KORN,Deftones,Slipknot

were 3 of my fav bands has a teen they were the Base and im older now and those 3 bands are still 3 of my fav

Neapolitan 12-15-2015 10:27 PM

Bands from the UK.

I like quite a few UK bands, my interest going from the 60s to now. Instead of mentioning a genre as my main interest (which would mean I have to one genre over a few others I like) I usually say I like bands from the UK. This way I don't have to pick Punk over Prog, which seems like a false dichotomy to me anyway - it's all music, just different approaches.

Keigh 12-16-2015 07:05 PM

I listen to all music almost equally. One day it's classic rock, the next it's old school 70s soul/r&b, then alternative and 70's punk. On the weekend it will be Miles Davis or Claude Debussy on Sunday mornings. Dennis Brown, Bob Marley or Gregory Isaacs on some evenings. Eno and Tangerine Dream a lot of the time. Let's just say Im not very monogamous when it comes to music. But if pressed for one genre that I fall into more than others it's definitely electronica/trip hop.

The Batlord 12-16-2015 10:12 PM

Metal in general definitely, but it's too hard to pin down which sub-genres are my niche anymore. A decade ago I would have told you thrash metal, hands down, but old school metalcore, doom/sludge/stoner, trad metal, power metal, and 1st wave-style black metal all dominate my playlists too much to say anything but metal in general.

News to everybody, I'm sure.

Mondo Bungle 12-16-2015 10:16 PM

If I had to guess I listen to grindcore, psytrance, minimal synth/wave, screamo, black metal, noise rock, post-hardcore and dub the most. Seems cool enough

You can never have too much Emmure.

I once was a fan of hip hop and R&B. I stayed loyal to hip hop but then came Old School Hits, the ones I was raised on that would have other adults question me what do I know about that kind of music, then I switched to Jazz, ever so really im doing the switching, I've went from listening to krump music to chopped and screwed to bass filled music and still do. It's once every now and then I listen to hip hop. Even a little of the chinese flute sometimes.

Akyho 12-17-2015 07:48 AM

New wave is the love of my life and what I am into all the time and it seems to have always been that way, as bands I would take note off as a kid tend to have been New Wave 9/10 even tho I did not know what New wave was.

I am even slogging away at work at Christmas and a unknown yet familiar Christmas song comes on and I am now perked and happy to be listening to Christmas music as it was a New Wave Christmas song.

I came across it as a proper genre and understanding it with what other bands are in it, aswell as the sound. Weirdly enough it was the Japanese New Wave Band Polysics that opened me up to the genre as a genre yet it was Devo that showed me it in all its glory.

My childhood friend be Ska, while I was just loved New Wave I never knew it, yet I was hanging out with Ska once Madness blasted my ears with Baggy Trousers, then got pretty deep with it for years untill New Wave came into my life...kinda stopped hanging out with my friend. Still visit.

Another one I have spent alot of time with is unusual/experimental/prog rock which only makes sense since its alot like New Wave in the basics.

Then overall I am a sucker if any of these are Japanese.

Some of other flings in past was Punk and Jazz. Punk I never got to deep into I ended up on the fringes and picking up the lesser punk bands as things I will often listen too, yet I wont say no to some proper Punk.

Jazz I do enjoy yet I never know their names lols, Jazz I suppose is my one night stands.

Then there is the ever fun blond you know you can have fun with in the form of Pop, namely Synth or bubblegum pop. Sometimes you just need to have a good time and not think.

this is genuinely sad...

because you more-or-less abandoned something you love because others who didn't take the time to understand or even afford you the basic respect for your independence questioned your taste and didn't support you.

I mean I am no advocate of the line of reasoning to continue doing something just because it feels right ignoring the possibility that it's haphazardous and you somehow missed that, so definitely ask yourself why people question you. But when it comes to music, who cares? Enjoying one form of music shouldn't have any bearing over your life, unless you are susceptible to messages or lyrics that might advocate some at-risk behavior. But mostly, it's a free-for-all and like whatchu like. Except kanye...don't like him. That's just bad form!!! Good producer but just a d-bag of a human being...we don't like his kind 'round these parts.

I have a guilty pleasure in enjoying some of the japanese, I guess J-Pop, music from anime some times. Although some of it is just genuinely good, by any music lover's standards I imagine.

And if I got music on shuffle, some of the strictly Japanese lyrics joints? I'll quickly advance the track 'cause it does sound childish but when I'm by myself--ROCK ON! But if somebody discovered I enjoyed it--so what?

My point is that you shouldn't feel guilty for enjoying hip-hop music. I might even playfully criticize you at some point in the future but that's part of camaraderie. At the end of the day I wouldn't wantchu to deny yourself for the sake of my approval and others aroundju should conduct themselves the same way.

Anyway, I hope you take courage and return to form 'cause it sounds like you owe some of your earlier tastes an apology. Unless you genuinely just evolved and no longer appreciate it the same way...then I guess just move on.

Black Francis 12-17-2015 12:52 PM

My main genre is Alt rock but i also really like experimental rock and new wave.. oh, and a bit of jazz, mainly swing jazz.

^This. Don't let the man bring you down, Cil.

Answering the OP, the nebulous term of avant garde will do. And jazz, hip hop, and metal too.
