Accordion-heavy music, please!

Lately I've been going through another circus/cabaret phase, and I'm finding myself increasingly seeking accordion-heavy music. Please post some of your favorites for me to explore... They don't need to be circus-themed... not that I would complain if they were :)

I'll kick it off with "Marlene Dietrich" by Vagabond Opera...

You need some Truart in your life. I never realized an accordion could be so imposing until I heard this album:

I DO need this in my life. I'm not really sure how I lived so long without it, actually... Thanks, man!

Janszoon 02-26-2016 08:00 PM

Also, if you're checking out accordion music, you're probably already familiar with Astor Piazzolla, but just in case you aren't:

Frownland 02-26-2016 08:02 PM

Pauline Oliveros made some accordion drone, which is pretty badass imo.

Tom Waits has some great accordion work in his music too, plus I'm guessing that it's more along the lines of what you're looking for.

Tin Hat (Trio) uses accordions occasionally as well

Now that I think about it, I do listen to a lot of accordeon-heavy music.

Spoiler for A lot of Youtube:

Judging from the four accordions that I've played, Hohner makes a pretty great accordion.

Only accordion to you.

(^made me wince, too.)

Frownland 02-26-2016 09:21 PM

It was kind of a chuckle that became a wince of what I've become and that my father was right, for me.

For reasons unknown, this video refuses to parse the YouTube tags, so I'm forced to post this as a link. If anyone can explain what I'm doing wrong I'd be profoundly grateful. In the interim please use the following link:

Hamster Theatre - Vang Vang

I continue to try to make a YouTube of the live version of this (the program I used to use is no longer supported), I will continue to endeavor to post this great performance.

Frownland 02-27-2016 10:16 AM

Not working when I try it, either. Maybe they have embedding disabled or something like that.

Well, when I try pasting the usual whatever-it's-called after v=____________ it's all in CAPS, but when I tried editing it was all lower case, whatever difference that makes *shrug*

Frownland 02-27-2016 10:26 AM

Ah, that's it. The forum filters out all caps posts, so throwing in a sentence with lowercase letters like this one will fix it.

Paul Smeenus 02-27-2016 10:27 AM

Brilliant, thanks Frownie

At the risk of trolling my own thread, I'm going to have to politely request that you change the spelling to "Frowny," lest I find myself unable to muster any future respect for either of you.

Paul Smeenus 02-27-2016 12:07 PM

I've known Frownie since 2/2013, I recognize that you made apologies but you did so without any right to do so. Frownie it will remain. Disrespect away.

Frownland 02-27-2016 12:21 PM

You guys should both just call me Frownland, or my full name, Frowndryland.

Can I call you Philbert instead?

I ask, because Esteban Jordan was considered the Hendrix of the accordion during his time and I can attest (as well as many others)
that he was absolutely jaw-droppingly amazing - seen live or heard otherwise!

^ The liner notes on a compilation cd that I have uses the exact same phrase to describe Sharon Shannon!

Lisnaholic 02-28-2016 07:01 AM

Of course even I can see that Sharon Shannon's music isn't remotely similar to Hendrix in any way; she is just another victim of lazy journalistic thinking, like all those "new Bob Dylan" songwriters.

Prompted by this thread, I had a look at some Flaco Jimenez clips last night, but rather disappointingly, a lot of his music fails to rise above a kind of chirpy, cheesy, generic style. So I took your advice and discovered that Esteban Jordan's musicianship is much more satisfying. Thanks again for a great recommendation, rostasi.

Plenty of accordion here too, btw:- http://www.musicbanter.com/avant-gar...r-s-guide.html

grindy 02-28-2016 07:08 AM

Did someone say Hendrix and accordeon?

Haha very appropriate clip, grindy! So it's officially, scientifically proven - Kimmo Pohjenen is the true Hendrix of the accordion.

into musical tonalities that others wouldn't be able to reach coupled with live
electronic modifications and explorations into jazz, R&B, latin, reggae, etc.

^ Impressive as always, rostasi.

I think the only accordion player I've seen live is Charlie Hart, member of Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance band. I used to watch them play in the back room of a pub, and Charlie Hart, rather than being a front-lining virtuoso player, would spend most of the concerts playing guitar. Any time there was a pause between songs, my friend and I would shout out, "Accordion!" and he would reluctantly shoulder the instrument for a few of the closing numbers. Poor guy probably hated us !

Psy-Fi 03-02-2016 04:28 PM

A video from a recent show I saw featuring Nathan & The Zydeco Cha-Chas, playing a cover of the song by Clifton Chenier that they're named after...

DoctorRadio 03-03-2016 05:02 AM

The only hit IO could think of was Billy Swann's "I Can Help" from 1974 isa, but now Im not so sure as it may have been played on keyboards

The Batlord 03-03-2016 10:56 AM

Not accordion-heavy (heavy-accordion?) in general, but I think they're notable just for being a metal band that uses them.
