Riot Grrrl is a punk genre so Bikini Kill is okay with me.

Punk is kind of a big genre, what constitutes punk here. Post punk bands like Bauhaus, folk punk like the Pogues, are we talking more straight up punk rock and hardcore?

I think this is more straight up punk.

Minor Threat
The Stooges
Dead Kennedys
MDC

I went with more classic punk if I could. I think we could in the future even do a separate round for hardcore and other punk genres.

The Batlord 07-09-2016 10:19 AM

I would have voted for the Stooges, but I'm assuming there's gonna be a proto-punk battle, so I might as well save them for that.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't vote for them in both.

Dylstew 07-09-2016 10:57 AM

I meant to go with my bottom list.

William_the_Bloody 07-09-2016 02:16 PM

I see in that case

1. The Dead Kennedys
2. The Exploited
3. Slow
4. Death Sentence

Had to, instant blockhead compulsion, but I'll change one of my votes to Blood for Blood if you change one of your votes Blood for Blood.

Slow were a highly regarded Canadian punk band from the 80's that only ever released a 6 inch and a few singles before imploding. They are regarded as having influenced the Seattle grunge scene...to what extend...???

Really? I've listened to a bit of them, but don't remember them being anything special. And their last album was kind of a dumpster fire. I mean, those lyrics. Woof. That's some ICP-level poetry right there.

I tend to like British hardcore because they messed around with a lot of effects pedals, (Reverb, delay, phasers ect)

Lol on the high grade poetry, Wattie's not a guy with a college degree, sex and violence....and a lot of booze

The Batlord 07-09-2016 07:53 PM

I was talking about Blood for Blood.

The Batlord 07-09-2016 07:57 PM

I mean, listen to these lyrics. They're like an unintentional parody of every trashy NYHC/beatdown hardcore band. These lyrics are just as, if not more ridiculous than anything Hatebreed, Madball, or Sick of It All ever put out. And let's not talk about the melodic vocals on Outlaw Anthems, sprinkled like newly laid turds all over the ****ing record. This is really one of the only songs that doesn't have them on that album, which is why it is one of the only actual good songs on it. But it's still dumb as ****.

Oh lol, Blood for Blood, well they're the ultimate hard knocks street band...

When it comes to punk I guess I'd rather listen to some tough SOB screaming about life on the streets than some vegan pussie preaching their politics to me.

(Sorry Bob, not thinking of your bands, I'm envisioning Anti Flag not Youth of Today...your stuff rocks.)

William_the_Bloody 07-09-2016 11:34 PM

Not that their is anything wrong with being vegan of course, I just hate it when I'm listening to music and feel like I'm undergoing a political indoctrination session.

Not incompatible. Rules in art are either nonexistent or incomprehensibly nebulous. There's always a way to make art "good". It's just that many people who want to bitch about politics AND make music are young narcissists with a chip on their shoulder who just want to tell everyone else how much better they are than everyone else.

Blank. 07-09-2016 11:52 PM

I agree, when I listen to music I don't want to hear the political viewpoint of a 21 year old Marxist airhead. That is why at the end of the day AC/DC is loaded into my Itunes, and Anti Flag is buried somewhere on an external hard drive.

And this is why I take the Sex Pistols over the Clash. The Clash are as close to being objectively a better band as you can get, but for the most part I don't have to deal with all the bull**** politics. And when I do, I can usually just pass it off as amusingly childish trolling ("God Save the Queen" or "Bodies"), or the song kinda sucks anyway so who cares ("Holiday in the Sun").

I hear you, The Clash doesn't bother me too much though, they just have that whole liberal "feed the world" Bono thing going on.

I get annoyed with the whole anti capitalist "the United States is the root of all evil" message, and needs to be replaced. Replaced with what? The guys in Anti Flag couldn't run a popsicle stand let alone a business, if they ever got into power, we'd have an economic meltdown.

Speaking of The Clash that reminds me to do another album review.

Yeah the US sucks in a lot of ways, but we're still a step up from pretty much any other empire in history. I don't see us as a city on a hill or whatever the ****, but I guess we do more good for global stability than we do evil with our self-interested military operations. Maybe the world doesn't need a "world police" anymore, but I don't know that it would be a good idea to test that theory.

And most punk bands who bitch about us just come across as ignorant utopians who might have valid points, but are too into being counter-culture whiners to have any appreciation of pragmatism.

Well the world has been run by empire's since the Bronze Age, and as far as Empire's go the United States has been pretty benevolent, but when utopia is your benchmark I guess the US looks fairly despotic.

Human nature is a rather nasty affair, so of course the US engages in all sorts of power plays that screw over people in other parts of the world, but at the end of the day, you gave us a democratic Germany, Japan and South Korea, restored democracy and wealth to Eastern Europe, helped with the growth of democracy in South America, and advanced the world's life expectancy with your technological advances in medical science, but most importantly though, you gave us blue jeans and the Big Mac. I'll miss you guys when China is in charge.

The Batlord 07-10-2016 01:58 AM

**** Big Macs. It's all about the Baconator.

If you ignore the lyrics, anti flag actually makes some great punk songs, even if it lacks consistency.

I remember Anti-Flag being fun back in high school, but I don't know how good they are in general. But fun is all I care about.

But obviously I only responded to this post because you praised me.

Dylstew 07-10-2016 04:30 AM

Fun is really all they are, and all I need. The lyrics can get annoying tho.

That last sentence of yours was classic Batlord.
