Songs With Dark Subject Matter

I recently listened to the song iowa by slipknot. This song is one of those that is a bit dark.

The song is about murdering someone. And the **** Corey Taylor or supposedly did in the studio when recording the song adds to the creepy factor. He took broken glass and was cutting himself as well as vomiting all over himself while in the middle of recording the song.

What are some other songs with dark subject matter that you like?

About how a fire burned everything in sight, told from the perspective of the fire.

Ah! I don't know a single glam rock song darker than Bohemian Rhapsody, what with the killing and going to hell.

I find myself in the darkest depths of nu metal today.

Korn - Daddy

This a song about the lead singer, Jonathan Davis, getting raped by his father. The song beginning with an apology to his mother just gives it such a strange feel. Then it goes into a more of a standard Korn song followed with the usual shock lyrics. Then the screams of hatred and tears of terror start at the end and it makes you realize how personal this song is.

Family time murder suicide with a quick escapade to hell.

Chopping balls off and feeding them to the new eunuch, cutting out unborn babies, etc.

Self harm and abuse (their whole discography fits the category)

Strange Fruit always really gets to me for some reason.

Can't post links here yet, but the song that really creeped me out the most will be Robert Wyatt - Sea Song.
Something strange and scary is felt all along the songs. A true dark masterpiece.

Amazing song, but it's a love song which kinda eclipses all creepiness.

I also wrote in your thread how to post YT vids.

I don't know what this song is about, but i assume it's about a man who is raped as a boy who grows up to do the same.

Black Francis 07-12-2016 06:59 PM

If im not mistaken this song is about 2 brothers that worked at a zoo and were in love with the same woman. Both lost their lives in a zoo accident and she was left with no one. I think it's told through the perspective of the woman's daughter. Some single moms can't catch a break.

"Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy~ "

I can't help but to wonder why would he write that song. Why put himself through reliving such a terrible experience. I mean the subject isn't his girlfriend leaving him, this song is as personal as it gets.

Yet another pixies song that talks about incest. In this one Frank narrates the story of a troubled kid that got outta hand and even had an incestous relationship with his sister after he killed her

"He took his sister from his head
And then painted her on the sheets
And then rolled her up in grass and trees
And they kissed 'till they were dead"

You have to take into account that most victims of child abuse keep it in secret and feel very ashamed about it when they shouldn't cause it wasn't their fault. If they don't find some sorta way to express that pain it could eat them up. I think he chose to record that song to express to other victims that they're not alone and im sure that through him sharing his story some of his listeners that went through that found the courage to break the silence just as he did.

Bright Eyes - Amy In The White Coat

Deals with a father sexually abusing his daughter. He mentions that he used to do the same thing to her older sisters too, but she's (Amy) "his favorite one".

Immortal Technique - Dance With The Devil

Talks about a young man aspiring to join a gang and willing to do whatever it took to become initiated. In the end he had to rape and kill a woman whose head was covered by her own shirt only to find out after-the-fact that it was his own mother that he raped. He then commits suicide while the gang proceeded to kill his mother.

A song about a man that gets raped than goes on to rape others.

Tool - Prison Sex

I understand that. And I'm not faulting him for it. He can write about whatever experiences he wants. I'm just saying that I've had way less worse stuff happen to me that I never talk about with anyone. But that said, I'm not a rape victim. Especially not a rape victim of my own father. So I can't really comment on how someone who is would feel.

. . . or if you have the patience to listen to a much longer live version:

Chula Vista 08-06-2016 01:05 PM

A mother sings a lullaby to a child
Sometime in the future the boy goes wild
And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy

A walk in the woods and I will try
Something under the trees that made you cry
It's so erotic when your make up runs

I got wiring loose inside my head
I got books that I never ever read
I got secrets in my garden shed
I got a scar where all my urges bled
I got people underneath my bed
I got a place where all my dreams are dead
Swim with me into your blackest eyes

A few minutes with me inside my van
Should be so beautiful if we can
I'm feeling something taking over me

I could think of a few:

2 songs about child abuse

JGuy Grungeman 08-11-2016 04:43 PM

Actually, this is from Songfacts. Jonathan Davis quote.

"People think 'Daddy' was written because my dad f--ked me up the ass, but that's not what the song is about. It wasn't about my dad or mom. When I was a kid I was being abused by someone else and I went to my parents and told them about it. They thought I was lying and joking around, so they never did any s--t about it. They don't believe it was happening to their son. I don't like to talk about it."

Not to be that guy, but i don't trust songfacts. I've found so many contradictions reading their site. Not saying this isn't true, but it's not a good source.

really every song on Bodychoke's third album is amazingly disturbing....but this one....a first person talk to a kidnap victim explaining to them what the rest of their pathetic existence will be like.
