Listening habits
I'm curious to know about the music listening habits of members here. Especially cause mine are very sporadic and I'm sure we all have different ones.
Right now I'm not listening to any music and trying to do so would feel like a chore. I'm going through a period where all music sounds stale and I just can't find any interest in listening to music. I see some members here that seem to listen to music every day and are always talking about new artist and their latest release and idk how they keep that up without taking a break or getting bored with the experience. Though I periodically go through this phase where I get uninterested in music eventually I break out of it and go through a period where I get obsessed with a particular artist or genre, awhile ago I got obsessed with Kas product and only listened to new wave and later on I got obsessed the residents and only listened to experimental music but after I sucked each one dry now I moved on. I've come to notice that my music listening habits go through a cycle of being obsessed and then being completely disinterested but I have yet to figure out if this cycle comes from my current emotional state or if it's just I have a very selective taste. |
My exploration of music has slowed to almost nothing in the past year. I've established albums that I would consider to be the best in their respective genres, and I'm okay with just listening to those. I'm highly judgemental and I've concluded that the odds are very small I'll hear something better than what I've heard already--only with genres I'm familiar with of course. It's very likely I'll hear some jazz that I love with minimal exploration, because I've never actively searched for jazz that I like.

You think Dolly will make this disinterested feeling go away? I highly doubt it.

And apparently to some ppl that artist is Dolly Parton. |
When I listen to albums, I tend to put trying out new genres and gaining experience in them ahead of trying albums I've been waiting a long time to hear. Example, I'm trying to get more into folk as I haven't even heard 100 folk albums yet, but not many of them oare high on my to-do list, not like many rock albums such as the Fugazi discography, Atom Heart Mother, and Flood by Headswim.

Sometimes I spend several hours a day listening to music and sometimes I go several days without listening to any music. It depends on what I'm doing and whether I'm in a musical mood.
I used to get obsessively into specific genres and bands much more when I was younger and I'd spend days or weeks focusing on my latest discovery. These days my musical tastes are more varied and I don't listen to any single band or genre for more than a couple of hours at a time at most. |
I don't understand the 100 albums thing either, seeking that kinda validation doesn't look like it is for the sake of self interest, it feels like it's for the sake of social interest, like you need and arbitrary amount of experience to justify to ppl that you know about music.
That's kinda what im like too Psy fi. |

i don't know if anyone else does this but sometimes when i'm listening to an album for the first time and i really like the first 2 or 3 songs, i'll just play those over and over again, without listening to the rest of the album. and then when i start to get sick of those songs, i'll play the whole album and listen to the rest of the tracks. its annoying, idk why i do it but oh well.

I don't binge on genres or artists so much, so maybe that's significant somehow? Looking for new stuff happens at least a few times a month too. Quote:

I like my music how I like my women: touching me in ways you can't imagine.

See, the difference between you and Frown is... you're funny.

I know.

I'll usually get hooked on a couple of songs for several days, then get bored, move on to another couple, and a few months later will be back to those first couple songs.

I've quite bad Tinnitus, so I listen to music or talk radio all day if I'm about the house. I try to listen to an album that's new to me each night after dinner.

I don't mix it up much to me honest. Reggae, dancehall and hip hop in rotation 90% of the time.

music lovers
I happen to listen to two music websites SupremeVibz on Sundays from 9 pm to midnight EST and MUZICALMAESTRO on Wednesdays from 9 pm to midnight. They vary the genres and have a lively chatroom to like or dislike the music. I think their styles are special

If you don't religiously listen to records everyday (old or new, familiar or not) I don't think you have any business on this site.

I touched on it a little in the shouty yesterday but the way I listen to music is that I will go through an entire album and then cherry pick out the tracks that I ended up liking the most or has the most replay value or what I would deem a radio hit if they were smart enough to push it. I take those tracks and put them into a playlist that I can listen to later on.
Good, bad and in between, I listen to it all and give bands/artists a chance. I also venture outside of my listening comfort zone to go through an album of genres I really don't like to see if I can find tracks that I am surprised by and end up liking. |

I'm an INTJ with OCD, and as such I study my latest musical discoveries of micro-genres, artists, or movements obsessively for days or weeks at a time, with a meticulous methodology for listening.
I drafted a process guide at one point but I've honed the procedure so that it has become invisible and instinctive. But for the sake of simplicity, here is an excerpt from pp 32 of The Innerspace Library Emergency Reboot Manual which summarizes my listening process: Quote:

station surf.
When something strikes my fancy, I listen for awhile. Then back to surfing.

Usually it actually takes me a long time to like a band after first listening to them.
And due to the fact that I can't comprehend lyrics audibly, I like to have my first listen while reading along with the lyrics whenever possible. In the car, I usually listen to the indie/alternative rock radiostation but I'll skip between the 5 different hit stations when the preferred is on commercials. |
