Rediscoveries
 

I'm talking about those albums you have in your collection that you had kind of forgotten about and then you happen to hear them again and are blown away. Sometimes it's rediscovering an album you always thought was great but had forgotten about, sometimes it's suddenly realizing an album you could never quite get into is actually pretty fantastic suddenly.

Holy Other—Held (2012)
I actually really liked this when I first heard it back when it was new, but I kind of forgot about it. Listening to it now, I'm remembering how good it is. Mellow, sensual, good stuff.

I remember a year or so ago sticking on You Could Have It So Much Better by Franz Ferdinand 'cause I'd only given it a few listens on release before abandoning and forgetting it. Beyond the sick, groovy riff of 'The Fallen' I barely took an interest. I thought it was over-long, lacking the punch of the original and flatly delivered.

Then suddenly; BAM!

Where did all these great songs come from? It is amazing how time can change your perception of a record's sound. It sounded impassioned, slick, textured and full of trippy/comic lyrics.

'This Boy', 'Evil and a Heathen', 'Well That Was Easy' and the title track were actually punchier than their counterparts in the debut after all and had all the pace and flamboyance I love from the band. 'Eleanor Put Your Boots On', 'I'm Your Villain', 'Walk Away' and 'What You Meant' had such rich, dance-worthy grooves and confidently sung vocals that I actually felt guilty for being so harsh on the album in the past.

It was nice to get drawn into a longer, more mature and bittersweet Ferdinand world with a darker all-round feel and less self-conscious indie pigeon-hole vibe.

I'm sorry Franz...sorry you got shot and started WW1.

Pink Floyd's The Final Cut. Kedvesem wanted to hear some Floyd she hadn't heard before, and I hadn't heard it since high school (at which time I listened to it constantly).

Maggie, what have we done?

I used to hate Tame Impala and how they sounded, so I revisited them a couple weeks ago and totally dig them now. I couldn't believe that I would ever dig the genre, but now I just might explore further.

Pet Sounds would be proud.
