Default The Music Banter Time Capsule

This year I'd like to bring to Music Banter a personal tradition I've taken part in for the last 7 years: at the approximate midpoint of every year, I sit down and compile a mix (previously a tape, now a disc) of my favourite songs at that moment in time. What has resulted is a sort of autobiography of my musical growth; an amusing time capsule to reflect on and laugh at, starting with some atrocious filth and ending with some sublime artwork, but still on a clear path from 2006 to today.

I thought it would be fun to share these (sometimes humiliating) compilations, and see if anyone else is interested in starting their own tradition while I work on my entry for 2012!

What have you progressed from over the years? Post your tracklists or compilations here, and dig 'em up in a year.

Quite possibly one of your best ideas yet Ped, I'm also greatly in favour of this!

I am definitely airing our my dirty laundry in this thread, but re-listening to my puberty has put a grin on my face anyways!

Is there any interest in putting my compilations up in Youtube videos, or uploading them to a host site? I won't go through the trouble if there isn't.

One of the things I like about listening to these in order is that you can clearly tell which artists were the ones that took me into the next mix the next year. I will definitely compile a youtube compilation for each mix.

Some of these are so bad I can't help but laugh, but I'm so happy to share them.

There, the tracklist for my first annual mixtape is up. I remember painstakingly cutting this together on a cassette on my old stereo, which I eventually broke in the act of making 2007's mix tape. I remember spending hours examining the selection and flow of this compilation, and here it is now in all of it's teenage scene kid glory.

06 The Audition - You've Made Us Conscious
07 Panic! At the Disco - Time to Dance
08 Fall Out Boy - Dance Dance
09 Alkaline Trio - Mercy Me
10 My Chemical Romance - Thank You For the Venom
11 Bedlight for Blue Eyes - Leaving Berkeley Heights

15 The Academy Is... - The Phrase That Pays
16 Something Corporate - I Kissed a Drunk Girl
NOTEWORTHY EVENTS OF 2006
  • Saw My Chemical Romance play at the Calgary Saddledome. First concert ever. Literally wet pants after show outside venue.
  • Discovered Jack's Mannequin on Last Call with Carson Daily at 3 AM. Everything in Transit would later provide the soundtrack to my entire summer. I possess vivid memories of my best friend at the time setting hookers on fire in GTA: Vice City to the summery, tinkly piano of Dark Blue.
  • Discovered Fall Out Boy and subsequent plethora of identical bands. This would direct my life for an entire year, until I decide that Pete Wentz is a cunt, and quit listening to them.
  • Cut hair into mohawk after mother's failed attempt at Davey-Havok haircut.
Spoiler for THE COMPILATION (WARNING: Youtube heavy!):

01 Something Corporate - Me and the Moon
02 Brand New - You Won't Know
03 Gatsbys American Dream - The Giant's Drink
04 AFI - Miss Murder
05 Marianas Trench - Decided to Break It
06 The Matches - You (Don't) Know Me

11 Taking Back Sunday - Error Operator
12 Cobra Starship - The Church of Hot Addiction
13 Marianas Trench - Alive Again
14 Brand New - Millstone
15 Something Corporate - Down
16 My Chemical Romance - Sleep

NOTEWORTHY EVENTS OF 2007
  • Late December of 2006 in the start of my graduating year, my grandmother dies. Turn to the Brand New album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me as a result. This would be one of the most important albums I've ever listened to, and would be responsible for the subsequent mix tapes to come.
  • See Brand New perform aforementioned album live at Calgary's MacEwan Hall with then best friend. This remains one of the best shows I've ever seen and possibly the most vivid concert experience I've ever had.
  • See Marianas Trench perform in Kelowna. Years later I will feel nothing but the deepest shame when reflecting upon this experience.
  • Somehow manage to graduate from high school during one of the most difficult years of my young adult life, in which I lost many friends to the dramas of highschool, and loved ones to illness and age.
Spoiler for THE COMPILATION:

Great idea, Pedestrian.
I would gladly participate, but my memory is not what it used to be. I have a hard time remembering what I did last week, never mind last year, and as for what I listened to, well. Also, my memory is not what it used to be. Besides, in general my music tastes only really changed over the last year or so, due to participation here, so any mixtape I tried to do would be quite uninteresting and the same music each year mostly. Maybe.

Also, my memory is not what it used to be. What did I just say? Who am I? Oh yeah. And my memory is not what it used to be.

But your compilations seem very interesting; as ever, bands I've either never heard, or never heard of. A varied musical life, indeed.

But my memory, as I may or may not have mentioned, is not what it used to be.

And now I forget what it was I was going to say...
