Hell. The Beefhearty look on his debut is the most interesting thing yet mentioned.

it's a great album as well, maybe better than FACE TAT, albeit far less accessible.

oh and before we get started, you know i'm not the only one who hasn't read the rules. this place and rules get along together about as well as Chula and Frownland.

i found this album late last year thanks to a friend of mine who told me to check out Zach Hill's solo work. it was somewhat coincidental that i was the one to introduce this friend to Death Grips, but knowing that we had similar tastes I figured it would probably be worth while.

initially the album polarized me. i knew i liked it, but it was such an intriguing blend of noisy experimental production and some very catchy pop sensibility. while Zach's drumming is phenomenal, it wasn't, and still isn't the reason why i enjoy this album. in many ways i believe i enjoy this for the way it contrasts Death Grips' sound. where DG seem to be infused with elements of punk, metal and extreme music as a whole, it seems that Zach's solo material borrows far more from experimental pop (AC in particular) and the likes of Zappa and Beefheart.

just look at the cover for his debut release

definitely strikes me as an ode to Beefheart.

I have to try to sig that! :)
I do wonder though, as Frownland would say, what's your source for that comment? I think everyone knows the rules, and if they don't then they only have to go to the OP.

Your review is hardly a ringing endorsement of the album you recced Qwertyy. You spend more time talking about DG and Beefheart. Did you like it? What's your end rating/impression? I'm not sure even after what you wrote.

i like the album, i'm not willing to assign it an arbritrary rating because i find it to be a polarizing album that i can't just stick a number on. same reason i wouldn't really stick a number on any of the (rather limited) experimental music i listen to. there's a lot to take in and my sentiments are different after each listen.

i mention death grips a lot because he's more well known as their drummer and feel that most people go into this expecting something similar. i feel that it is similar but with different influences made readily obvious, such as Beefheart and Zappa as mentioned.

i hope that covers everything you wanted to know, but i want to clarify. i prefer smaller reviews because i believe it encourages conversation and asking questions. if everyone replied in highly structured lengthy reviews there might not be anything left to discuss. to each his own i suppose :)

No, you're okay on a rating, but at the end I need to total up whether an album received, in general, more likes, loves, mehs or hates, so I just wanted to know, as I couldn't figure from this (even though you recced it) whether or not you really liked it. So would that be a Like or a Love, for the final ratings when everyone is done?

And nobody has to do a long review. It's up to each person. I use the matrix as I find it an easier way to organise my thoughts rather than have to write a full review. But a few lines is fine; just make some sort of definitive conclusion at the end - I loved it, I hated it, I want to bury in in my garden and forget about it, I want to marry it etc.

Why do you have to do that?
