God Bullies - Mama Womb Womb

I don't generally listen to this type of music, but their have been instances when it does appeal to me in some way or another. I enjoyed this Album somewhat, the vocalist does a pretty good job for the type of music he makes, but it doesn't really appeal to me, the instrumentation can be a bit catchy at times, but often his singing style would ruin it for me, I also enjoyed the audio clips they threw in, I've always enjoyed when bands do that, it adds a little uniqueness to it. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Follow the Leader, I liked the bits with the Female voice added in, and Red Blood. I don't really have a least favorite track, and the lyrics sound pretty basic. Overall I think the album is pretty consistent, and the instrumentation can be a bit catchy, however this singing style doesn't really do it for me,I also like the second half more then the first half, it had more songs where the singing style didn't bother me as much. ill give this a 6/10.

God Bullies
Mama Womb Womb

1. What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in?
I'm a sucker for a nice speech/dialogue sample, and this one works well for not only this track but the rest of the album as well. And while it take some time for the actual music to start, it had a nice groove and it was something that I hoped to hear more of with the album.

2. What did you think of the opening track?
Great tone-setting track. The sample of the ranting and raving sermon about the danger of the beat was great.

3. What did you think of the next track?
I liked the music a bit more than the first track.

4. Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions? I'll compare them to another album we heard in this club, Old Lady Drivers. The vocals aren't amazing by any means, but they compliment the music really well and are almost a necessity to stand out from the rest of the music.

5. Did the music (only) generally appeal to you, or not?
I'll join the growing chorus of people comparing these guys to Butthole Surfers. While I liked the music quite a bit, the dialogue samples are always something I love to hear.

6. Did the album get better or worse as you listened to it (first time)?
I was enjoying it from the start, and I more or less liked it the whole time I was listening to it.

7. What did you think of the lyrical content?
I didn't catch all the lyrics, but I was a big fan of the content in the sampled vocal portions.

8. Did you like the instrumental parts? (see note 3)
Noisy, groovy, weird, thumping... All good things by my standards.

9. What did you think of the production?
Solid, aside from a few effects used on the singer's voice.

10. Did you know of this artiste prior to listening to the album, and if so, did that foreknowledge colour your perception of this album?
Never heard of them.

11. Is this, generally, the kind of music you listen to or not?
I don't want to reduce these guys to a label, but this sort of noisy/psychedelic alt rock is something I enjoy, but have never actively sought out.

12. Assuming you listened to the album more than once, on repeated listens, did you find you liked the album more, or less?

Listened 3 times, consistently enjoyed it all three times.

13. What would you class as your favourite track, if you have one?

This album was bookends for me. The opener and closer were my two favorite tracks.

14. And the one you liked least?
I didn't like the stop/start nature of Red Blood.

15. If the album in question is a debut, did that fact allow it, in your mind, any leeway, and if so, was that decision justified or vindicated? (see note 4)
I believe this is a debut album. I'd say it's pretty solid.

16. Are you now looking forward to hearing more from this artiste, if you have not heard any of their other material?
Maybe more from the artist, but more likely from the genre at large.

17. Were you surprised by your reaction - positive or negative - to the album?
Once I heard about 10 minutes of the album and realized what the sound would be, it was one of those albums that I knew I would, at worst, tolerate and probably end up liking.

18. Did the album end well?
I loved the last track. I loved the soaring guitars over the bouncy bass guitar and just the general noise of the whole thing. I'd say What Are You Looking For is my favorite track of not only the album, but my favorite among all of the songs we've listened to in this club.

19. Do you see any way the album could have been improved?
The weird part is, while I can't really find an actual notable flaw with the album, I found myself only liking it rather than loving it. I'm sure if I sat down with the album more than just the week and three times I've heard it, I could find something to be improved on and figure out why I don't love it.

20. Do you think the album hung together well, ie was a fully cohesive unit, or was it a bit hit-and-miss?
It's a consistent album.

As positive as my overall review is, I just can't give Mama Womb Womb anything more than a 7/10 since I can't say I loved the album. I really, really liked it, but I just don't love it. Maybe it's because the middle of the album is good, but pales in comparison to the opener and closer. But anyway, if the criteria we've established is anything above an eight means you loved the album, I can't rate it any higher than a 7.

Oh, right I actually did listen to this like 4 days ago.

Mamawombwomb - God Bullies

is an okay album. I like all the weird elements but it's just not put together in a very interesting way. The end.

7/10

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.

God Bullies - Mama Womb Womb

I don't have much time for a full bullet point review today, but I did really like this album. I'm currently listening to it again and I might have to reconsider my initial rating (7.5) and bump it up further. Love the whirling guitars, manic vocals, fuzzy bass and all of that good stuff. I think the last two albums on this thread have strengthened my desire to start seeking out more harsh and noisy rock music. Really good stuff.

Rating: 8/10

You guys had better deal me out of this until summer. I'm up to my neck in other, more pressing things. Hopefully it's still running in a few months.

God Bullies - Mama Womb Womb (1989)

I actually liked this one right out of the gate, spazzy production values included. That one tour where they went out with Helmet and The Melvins must have been pretty fun, because raucous stuff like 'Creepy People' and some of the bluesier bangers like 'Red Blood' must have been even more blistering in a live setting. Outside of the obvious Butthole Surfers comparisons, I also hear hints of Danzig, The Residents and some of America's weirder RIO acts from around the same time period like Thinking Plague (without the violins and stuff).

All in all, while it sounds at times like a 3rd generation descendant of mindbending noisy weird classics like Orgasm by Cromagnon, the guitar work going on in the background elevates this into a point where I'll definitely jump off and explore the rest of the God Bullies discography at some point. 7.5 out of 10

Thanks Pet_Sounds My little brother was working on matrices in his pre calc class when I joined this forum. I remembered how cool the identity matrix was and have been using that as my username for websites now.

Also done.

Finally, can we get the last reviews of God Bullies done please guys? We're now into the first day of the review of DWV's album and I don't want that getting mixed up with ones from last week. Thanks.
