Yes. If you read them without hearing the song you'd be like WTF. But then you hear the song and they are awesome. But I get your point.

Not really, it's the delivery that makes it.

EDIT: As Chula explained.

The delivery has nothing to do with the lyrics though. If he sang completely different words—or even gibberish—in the same way, the song would still be just as good.

Sidebar: Tony Levin might be the coolest musician I've seen live (twice).

Even though it's from one of Depeche Mode's least good albums, I always liked the lyrics for the song In Sympathy:
[I]

They're almost falling over you
Why don't they call a truce
Whatever they are trying to do
It's of little use

They're drowning you in compliments
Trying to furnish proof
And though they speak with eloquence
There is little truth

You're bright, you're strong
You know your right from wrong
At least to some degree
You're wise, you're tough
You've heard their lies enough
You smile in sympathy

I'm watching your serenity
The way your soul transcends
Their tedious obscenities
Your patience never ends

And as the night begins to fade
You're heading for the door
Followed by a sad parade
You're on your own once more

You're bright, you're strong
You know your right from wrong
At least to some degree
You're wise, you're tough
You've heard their lies enough
You smile in sympathy

You're bright, you're strong
You know your right from wrong
At least to some degree
You're wise, you're tough
You've heard their lies enough
You smile in sympathy

I feel love, I feel love
I feel love, I feel love
I feel love

I feel love, I feel love, I feel love

Yes, I'm aware, but a solid delivery can make mediocre lyrics seem better by accentuating them in all the right places, so it's easy to understand why someone might put something in this thread that doesn't look very special out of context.

But, since I know the context, I know that the lyrics aren't impressive there either.

Not to Chula, apparently.
