If only more metal took in more of the good bits from Wagner. Most of the stuff with obvious Wagnerian influence is typically some god-awful power metal dreck.

(not thrashing power metal in general ftr ...or am I?)

OH: Yeah so the Beatles are a metal band now? They influenced it obviously so we should be inclusive of them. Talk about indefensible....

The Handel and Wagner thing. They do help you understand metal better. However, drawing the line on where we define genres...

Just listen to DP and Zep and use a little horse sense. Either you understand that this is a clear point of origin or perhaps, unbelievably to me, you can listen to those bands and not get it. If you can't hear the clear demarcation and get why it's different than the Beatles or Handel intuitively well... keep listening. Maybe you'll get it, maybe you won't.

Zep most definitely played a huge role in the formation of metal. Doesn't make them metal.

Sar....

...casm.

Strawman is such an easy term to throw out these days...

I'm not arguing against LZ and DP being influencers. They aren't metal. Simple as that.

Define this (early 1969) after listening to the whole thing. If you can't fit this into the metal genre you're just being jaded.

The FACT that the riff to Whole Lotta Love is metal makes them metal.

What separates them from being metal for me is that they are too rooted in blues rhythm to qualify.

Whole Lotta Love is every bit as metal as Paranoid.
