The Voyager Golden Record 3xLP BOx set from Ozma Records

I just ended my two month "no buying records" pause and pulled the trigger on this because it was a good price and I don't think I'll ever see it retail at $90 again. Super excited.

Definitely a sound investment! What a piece of history! In case you haven't seen the physical copies themselves yet, I blogged photos of the entire set in my member journal here and here.

Enjoy your keepsake!

Battra 04-10-2019 01:03 PM

Welp, due to an upcoming coalescence, I pulled the trigger on Pulse.

It's not as good as The Wall by Roger Waters 3LP set or the Radio Quebec by Waters LP set...

But, it's the only official Floyd live LP of any significance (sorry, but Live at Pompeii is from the before time and a movie) and Delicate Sound of Thunder...is way too short.

I've listened to the CD version of it, got it from the library about 50 times. It's a decent representation of the band.

If not from the classic era.

I just came from the thrift store, where I found some cool Jazz on vinyl in mint condition..Pyramid-MJQ..A Date With Jimmy Smith..Battle Stations-Eddie Lockjaw Davis..The Hawk Swings-Coleman Hawkins.

Zhanteimi 05-22-2019 06:47 PM

That same friend just bought the original 2001: A Space Odyssey soundtrack for me.

Frownland 06-08-2019 07:58 PM

Major score today. 4 George Russell albums, a couple of Don Ellis albums, Ornette's In All Languages, and Sun Ra's Monorails & Sattelites, all in the dollar bin! I think I'm more excited about the George Russell albums than the Sun Ra tbh. My ******* unclenched and fell from my forehead when I came across those. Got a comp with a longish Basho track on it too.

Zhanteimi 06-09-2019 01:16 AM

My old friend from uni and his mail-order wife just sent out a package of vinyl records for me. I wonder what's in the box?!

Exo 07-25-2019 08:40 PM

Been a while since I've posted finds here. Most of this stuff has come into my possession through the shop. I've been really good with not buying up everything nice that comes through but I do have a tendency to either save stuff that isn't in the best condition or stuff that's been sitting around the shelves for a while. Here are a bunch I've adopted from work. Not everything that's come into my hands, but some favorites. Running a record store is a blessing and curse when you're an avid collector of music...

Iggy Pop - Lust For Life - 1st pressing that I needed to have.
Jorge Ben ‎– África Brasil - Friend owns a shop in NYC and goes to Brazil every year to buy records. He gave me this beat up 1st press from Brazil.
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You - The most romantic song ever recorded and a true UK 10" pressing.
Nick Drake ‎– Five Leaves Left - 1st US pressing. F*ck you, Grindy.
Perigeo - Attraverso Il Perigeo - Wild album from Italy that came in one day.
The Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun - This thing funks.
The Dead Milkmen - Big Lizard In My Backyard - 1st pressing that I saved from the bargain bin. It has been played to death.
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme - Early reissue. I've been waiting for a nice copy to come along and I jumped on it.
The Can - Monster Movie - 1st German pressing of the first Can record literally came in with a bunch of Sinatra records. I couldn't believe it. It's beat up but plays fine.
Luis Gasca - For Those Who Chant - One of my favorite jazz finds this year at the shop.
King Crimson - Red - This had been sitting in the bins for months so I took a bitch home.
Dog Faced Hermans - Hum Of Life - If you don't know this album, you should really get on that.
John Zorn - Naked City - I splurged on a first pressing on discogs after selling some records I don't listen to anymore.
The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms - 1st UK pressing.
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom - 1st UK Press. I never got into teh whole canterbury scene but this is fantastic.
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks - 1st pressing. Hard to find and expensive. This was a super perk of being at the shop.
The Jesus Lizard - Goat - Been looking for a 1st press for ages and one walked in.
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder - The most "common" blue note record I find. This one was beat up so I snagged it.
Pete La Roca - Turkish Women At The Bath - 1st press stereo that I convinced my partner to sell to me after it sat on the wall forever.

We had a kid walk in with a serious collection. I mentioned a few weeks ago I suspected drug use. Before I suspected that, I took a few of his records home.

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity - 1st pressing.
Gospel - The Moon Is A Dead World - Purple repress.
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album - 1st UK Pressing.
Mogwai - Rock Action - 1st pressing.
Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People - 1st Pressing.
Helmet - Meantime - 1st Pressing
The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower - Dissertation, Honey - This album rips.
Harvey Milk - My Love Is Higher Than Your Assessment Of What My Love Could Be
The Locust - The Locust

Frownland 07-30-2019 07:30 PM

Last year, I gave a list of records to look out for to the owner of the record store that I frequent most with my number. One of those albums was Norma Tanega's Walkin My Cat Named Dog and he called me on Friday saying that he came across a copy that was in great condition. Unfortunately, I was camping in a spot where I had zero cell service, so I didn't get his voicemail until Sunday. Went into the shop and it got nerfed, he thought I had changed my number since I didn't respond :(. Thinking about just going through Amazon on or something after that dick tease.

Anyways, I picked this Paco album up as a consolation prize.

It's incredible that I don't post in this f*cking thread and it's my own damn thread. Frown directing Ki here made me realize how long it's been. I'm always adding and subtracting records so I'll just add the highlights since last summer.

Sun Ra And His Myth Science Arkestra - Angels And Demons At Play - First reissue from 1974 on Impulse!
Alice Coltrane Featuring Pharoah Sanders - Journey In Satchidananda - First pressing in wonderful shape. Paid a penny for it but I needed to have it.
Sonny Sharrock - Black Woman - One of my customers told me that they found this sitting in a used bookstore in my town. Right under my nose! It's a promo too which makes me like it more.
Tom Waits - Nighthawks At The Diner - Speaking of promo. This walked into the shop and I couldn't pass it up. Took it home.
Lee Moses - Time And Place - This was found pretty trashed up but it's goddamn Lee Moses and I wanted it for the collection anyway.
Bill Evans - Jim Hall - Undercurrent - 1962 stereo that my partner grabbed for me at an estate sale. My favorite album cover of all time and also a petty damn good record.
George Russell - Listen To The Silence - Anything George Russell, I buy. Anything.
Moondog - Moondog 2 - Original pressing.
John Coltrane ‎– Ascension (Edition II) - 1967 repress of the 2nd edition. Still looking for a first pressing.
The Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency! - First pressing. Walked in the shop and I, again, couldn't let it hit the shelves. This happens a lot.
Naked City - Torture Garden - First pressing. Friend of mine who is a huge collector had one and sold it to me.
Archie Shepp - Fire Music - First press mono I found through a good discogs seller.
Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity - Also a first pressing through the same seller as above.
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath - Found this for a good price. Might end up selling it one day but it's nice to have remnants of bands I don't really listen to anymore but shaped my listening towards the beginning.
Can - Future Days - Paid out the ass for this first US pressing but it's beautiful and one of my musthave records.
Suni McGrath - Cornflower Suite - Lesser known American Primitivism that only had one pressing in 1969. I'm all over that kind of sh*t.
The Ornette Coleman Quartet - This Is Our Music - 1961 stereo. Had some fantastic jazz records come in and this is the one I kept.
Terry Riley - In C - You don't see many Terry Riley records in the wild.
Pharoah Sanders - Elevation - First pressing and just a stellar record.
David Holland Quartet - Conference Of The Birds - Beat up German copy came in so I rescued it from the bargain bins. I'll need to upgrade this but a poor mans ECM record is still in better condition than most records. They packaged well.
Bill Evans - Interplay - 1962 first pressing that somebody brought back saying it didn't sound great. partner didn't want to deal with it so I brought it home from nothing and that person was an idiot. It plays great.
Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Safe As Milk - First press/mono/promo. Insane find in the back of a pickup truck. Cover was a bit moldy so I took it home. Cleaned up well.
The John Coltrane Quartet - Africa / Brass - First pressing. Beautiful copy. Again, came in with a bunch of fantastic records and this is the one I kept.

That's all for now. Those were the highlights of the first page of my discogs which was out of 250. I'll try to be more active on here because I bring home some weird sh*t every week that just won't sell in my shop of Fleetwood Mac fanatics.

Yup. First press stereo. The bookstore had the Sharrock priced fair, bout $50, but had it tucked away behind other sh*t. They didn't care what it was.

I went to a few record stores overseas, but I've still been buying records online from discogs and Redeye Records this past month. A good deal of these are new, but there are a few in here that I found used.

Elements of Joy PI08 - A side project of french producer Hadone, straight from the label
Ayarcana Laminator - Straight from the label, and they threw in a eurorack spacer too.
Silent Servant Shadows of Death And Desire - The clear vinyl version I found new in a shop in Harajuku, ended up paying a couple dollars more than I should of for this.
Neil Landstrumm Understanding Disinformation - Found used in a record store in Shibuya, pretty decent price.
Waki Kyoto EP - New, same place in Shibuya.
Sumisonic Flail EP - Ditto
Arkajo Nadir - Ditto (2)
LSD Third Process - Ditto (3) This was in a pretty dark blue transparent pressing
Oto Hiax s/t - Used, decent price for a decent album. Made by one of the members of Seafeel and Loops Haunt.
Tolouse Low Trax Asimiad - RP Impulse blind buy to justify shipping cost
Takaaki Itoh Killing All Anarchists RM
AEIT Sent To Punish - New direct from distributor
SHXCXCHCXSH VOOO EP - Ditto

I buy mainly dance music these days, but here's a photo from one of the shops I went to. It's also a bar too.

Here's a few things I've added in the last week through a few online sales and a few discoveries at the shop I bought for myself...

Canned Heat & John Lee Hooker - Hooker 'N Heat - I enjoy pretty much anything John Lee Hooker. This one is a nice clean first pressing.
Ludus - Riding The Rag - First pressing from Italy. Fantastic band.
Verne Langdon - Doctor Druid's Haunted Seance - I collect Halloween themed records and this is a unique one.
Codona - Codona - ECM is legit and my man Don Cherry plays on this
Henry Cow - Concerts - First pressing from Norway. I love this band.
Barry Altschul - Another Time / Another Place - Promo copy which doesn't seem to pop up often.
Wildflowers 2 - (The New York Loft Jazz Sessions) - Comp of free jazz artists.
Steve Lacy - Raps - He doesn't really rap.
Elvin Jones - Live - Tribute to Coltrane.

We aren't participating in Record Store Day this year. To keep it short and sweet, f*ck Record Store Day. RSD is a company that exists now to make money and they're the only ones guaranteed to make money so I'm not feeding the machine. It used to be different. Used to be about actual record stores. Now it's about whatever neon colored reissue of an INXS album is being released in "low" quantities. I'm 100% second hand. I don't have a distributor. I buy from collectors and family members, give a fair price for what I sell things for 20%-50% depending on what it is, and price the record fairly but realistically.

We pulled 50k since we opened July 7th.

I don't need that stupid commercial bullsh*t.

That being said, we were very busy today due to it being our last day open until next week. We are closing for five days for vacation. Had a bunch of calls looking for Tyler the Creator records and whatnot. Politely told them we are not participating in it this year. Thing that sucks is I have to do this two more times this year since they broke it up over three days.

Nice, my favourite local spot has taken the same route, the owner wears homemade "Fuck RSD" shirt for anyone who asks. Sounds like it attracts the worst customers too.

My partner has like no opinion whatsoever on anything so he doesn't really care if we do it or not. Sometimes he feels like we should do it every year but I'm always against it. His point is that it gives us promotion for the store and he's right about that to a degree but this year was just too confusing so he didn't care.

I'm just happy that I bought some records today and there was a copy of Arvo Part/Tabula Rasa which I've been looking for forever.

So you're like a 50s married couple where he as the husband technically has the right to make all the decisions but you as the wife badger him until he does what you want and his privilege lets him think everything's great or at least confusing enough that he just leaves it to you and since you're doing all the work behind the scenes you're bitter and jaded and waiting for second wave feminism?

Recently picked up Pink Moon by Nick Drake on vinyl. Gonna try to get his other 2 on vinyl as well.

ribbons 02-05-2021 01:41 PM

^ Nick pick, Key. I don't have any Nick on vinyl, although I do have all his CDs. I love his guitar playing and would like to hear the vinyl version for that aspect especially. I've probably listened to Bryter Layter the most over the years. On Pink Moon, I think "Things Behind The Sun" and "Parasite" are my favorite tracks.

P.S.: I have the same guitar that Nick is pictured with on the cover of Bryter Layter (the Guild M-20).

Was legit worried they'd be sold out on that record because of that article and general press surrounding that album tbh. It's what brought me into the store.
