STORY MODE: How Did You Get Hooked On Your Favorite Artist?
 

What song made you fall in love with your favorite musical artist? What was it about that song and that artist that made them your favorite?

And I'm not just talking about: "Hey, I heard a song and I liked it."

I'm talking about the artists that you go out of your way to own their entire discography. The artists that you defend TO THE DEATH, when everyone else says that you are wrong about them. Your favorite, Ride-Or-Die, you would rather punch your mama than miss their concert when they come through town, artist.

What was your first taste that got you hooked? Elaborate as you see fit my friends.

Well I first picked up the guitar then I kept playing and playing and now I can finally say that I love myself. I would definitely defend myself to the death too.

Will follow up with something more thought up about Beefheart and Shabazz, because I know that most people here don't know about that.

I'll start off with my favorite rapper, Chino XL.

When I was around 15, my older sister was dating a Mexican fellow. She would sometimes bring some of his CD's to our house to listen to. I loved music, so I would listen to them as well.

One such CD was a compilation album entitled "Hip Hop Decade: Raza Unida."

I had never heard complicated rhyme schemes and metaphors and similes before. At this point in life, I was into Linkin Park, Nirvana, System Of A Down. I have always been intelligent [put into advanced classes from 1st grade onward], and the thought of combining intelligent thought into music [not the best wording, but you know what I mean], which I thought of at that time in my youth, as a more primal, emotional type of conveyance/medium, really piqued my interest. It really was the birth of my love of lyricism.

I really didn't start exploring music til about 10 years ago, and it's hard to say what my favorite is because there's so much good, but I'd say I own more P-Funk/George Clinton albums than anything else. I got into them through smoking weed and listening to funk compilations. I don't smoke weed anymore, but when I did and I listened to "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts", it blew my damn mind. It still does to this day, their philosophy, and it's on all of their songs to listen to. They changed my perspective on life.

Why don't you smoke cannabis anymore?

It doesn't hsve the same effect when you smoke it all the time. I'm not against it at all, I'd probably have a bowl if it was offered to me and I knew I had time to just kick it and listen to music.

I guess my obsession with the Beatles began when I watched A Hard Day's Night on local TV (this was about 1970). Pretty soon after that, I was getting my Mom to buy me nothing but Beatles records. The first album I 'bought' was actually from the Mamas and Papas, but every album after that would be Beatles until I had their entire collection. The Beatles were ultimately my gateway to the music fan I am today.
