What Sucks About This Artist: Weezer Edition

I've noticed on this forum that Weezer doesn't seem to be held in high regard around these parts. So, I decided to create this thread so y'all can let me know what you hate about Weezer. They're my favorite band, and Pinkerton is my all time favorite album with the Blue Album in a close 2nd, but I have my problems with the band.

The Make Believe-Hurley era was terrible for Weezer fans like me. Ratitude in particular is one of the absolute worst dog**** albums I've ever heard in my life. Songs like Can't Stop Partying and I'm Your Daddy make me cringe in the worst way.

I can't bring myself to care about them enough to give them a dedicated listen. They just sound like bland indie kids making bland indie kid music.

Aw, Weezer kinda make me nostalgic. I liked them when I was a teenager. Same with Helmet. Don't really listen to them anymore, but whenever the thirty something cashier who wishes he was still in college throws them on the comic book store sound system, I bow my head in a moment of silence.

Weezer combined the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time with the ability to sew together some really catchy songs. I don’t have anything against them but I really can’t wrap my head around how they could be anyone’s favorite band. The praise critics lavished on their first two records were a result of getting too caught up in the moment.

Here's what sucks about Weezer: they were able write some really good, catchy rock songs ("El Scorcho" and "Say It Ain't So" especially stand out for me) but they were never able to sustain the quality for the duration of an entire album.

I don’t think they have enough good material to make a respectable greatest hits collection.

I think they do have enough songs scattered throughout their albums to make a good best of. Apart from the ones Janzoon mentioned they have Jamie, Suzanne, Across the sea, My name is Jonas and their bigger hits like island in the sun, hash pipe and so on..

I think what sucks about Weezer is that they been chasing the success of buddy holly too much. Every album had to have a chessy commercial single in an attempt to infiltrate pop culture and they nailed that with buddy holly but imo they shoulda focused more on doing their own thing cause they're a decent alternative band at their core. A good example of what i mean is their video for pork n beans.

I kinda like this song but at the same time it feels it's mocking pop culture in a desperate attempt to be a part of it. To me these kinda songs have cheapen their original sound which wasnt spectacular to begin with it was just good.

They're self-consciously quirky without the quirk. Pretentious af if you ask me.
