What's So Great about This Band?: The Shaggs!

I heard someone say they are the first "outsider art" band. I'm sure there has to be others, but I can't think of them now.

They are so wrong they are right.

So prepare yourself to have the Uggs blown off your feet.

Definitely unassailable

I heard from a reputable source one of them gave birth to Frownland, and the other two are his aunts.

Frownland 04-26-2018 09:36 PM

I would deny that but my aunts are pretty weird. I'll ask.

Frownland 04-26-2018 09:49 PM

On a serious note, this is definitely my favourite project that Nico has been involved with.

My favorite project of Nico is:

BTW The reason I can tell you're from Rock royalty is cause I am too. I am the secret love child of Nico and Brian Jones. That makes me genetically predisposed not only to have blond hair and also the inability to sing or swim. I would not lie to you mate. Chula Vista is the result of a torrid love affair between Jimmy Page and Mama Case. As a kid Chula would go around the school lunch room stealing other kids' sandwiches.

Hmmm. The ppl here who i think have good music taste like this band but to me they still sound like a bunch of a girls who can't play their instruments. What am i missing?

Frownland 04-28-2018 12:54 PM

It's pure outsider music because they're so young that they barely have any perspective. Their meter and sense of harmony is far out and the product is punk and hypnotic as ****. It's a very pure portrait of expression. Not to mention that they were forced into it by their delusional father, but I honestly would rather focus on the music than the lore of it.

The Fugs existed a few years earlier though.

At least those guys can keep a beat.

Frownland 04-28-2018 01:20 PM

Helen Wiggin has cadence.

I like what Frown wrote.

From my view:

There’s a lumpy synchronization about how they play that’s very appealing. The vocals and the guitar and the drums all swirl around and almost echo each other. That’s a way to describe harmonizing but it’s so surreal you’re almost forced to look for other words.

Also, they’re very tightly packaged songs. They’re not ****ing around. They’re not making an artistic statement. They’re simply cute songs but it’s as if they’re created in world with entirely different musical rules (theory) that only they understand.

They’re insanely pure. They’re completely unpolluted. It’s not driven by conventional musical standards but it’s not ego driven either. They’re just great songs that don’t sound like anything else ever recorded.

They’re a complete one off. The right time, the right space, the right instruments, the right chemistry, the right amount of knowledge, the right humility- so many things had to fall into place to make this happen it’s a goddamn miracle.

They represent hope. They prove that a different approach can work. Their music says that we don’t have to be stuck in this paradigm. It’s up to us.

Sounds like you got a little crush on them. ;)

I really hope they're legal cause I don't think OH cares. I mean it's been like 50 years but it's the principle.

Frownland 04-28-2018 01:49 PM

They're all legal now except for the dead one.

And Fugazi existed a few years later.

Only if the physical structure is still usable.

Both of these groups predate The Shaggs by a couple of years...
