Well, you'd have to say it's all about entertaining/distracting the masses. If we didn't have Eurovision people might start to use their brains, and surely we can't have that! It's also a status thing isn't it? You have to be in with the in-crowd, part of the gang. And for each country it's a chance to show off their talent, so basically a huge reality show with kind of no real solid prize at the end, other than national pride I guess and a finger up to all the other countries.

I think most Eurovision songs lie between these two entires:

Songs that had no real chance to start with but were sent to show representation but no real desire to win (else you are footed with the bill to host the next one).

And songs that are made by people who actually made big hits (I mean, the guy who wrote the song (playing the piano) is the guy who created U96, one of the pioneers of techno/eurodance). But they threw in odd extras lika Von Teese, wierd backup dancers, a guy who really can't sing but likes to flash his chest, and it ends up looking just..wierd.

Once in a while you get a Lordi or a Loreen..but on the whole it's bad. And that is why it is so fun to watch. Like a huge trainwreck wrapped in feather boas and sparkley glitter. You can't stop watching. And drinking during it just makes it even more hilarous.

But, I guess there is no enough interest here for a betting pool. No worries.

Eurovision terminates contract with Chinese broadcaster after failure to broadcast 'gay' Irish performance

All Irish people are gay. :)

I managed to sit through all 43 of the Eurovision (with some mid-way skipping) and whittled it down to what I think are the 11 least awful entries this year: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...MoVsBmXB5V40g2

No song was anything special. The ones I put on the playlist just managed not to be completely boring or terrible.

Worst song? Not sure. Many were quite bad, but Israel definitely tried very hard to make me puke.

If I had to decide on a "favorite", it would be Estonia. Respect to the singer of that one.

Eurovision gave you a boner? There were some nice women on it, sure. About the only reason to sit through it, really...

The music sure isn't providing much of an incentive.

I wasn't surprised that Isreal won although I was routing
for every other country to win.. even Austria. I just hope that Sweden gets some funnier commentators next year..they were so dry. Graham Norton probably had a field day
when that guy jumped on stage during Suries entry.

MicShazam 05-13-2018 12:21 AM

I didn't know who won. Not even when the finals were gonna happen.

But Israel??? Urghhhh.... Definitely a politically correct vote winner, because it can't be the song itself (it's trash).

I just don't see how a dancing pikachu is supposed to represent being different and the whole metoo movement.

But Isreal was already tipped to win. I was just surprised that Austria did so well. Must have been his pants.
