Let's hope it's better than the last album of that name we had in this club! Sorry, Goof! Ant's pick for roundsix. You know the drill by now...

I don't see any reviews yet, so who voted "Hated it?" Is it really that bad?

The initial vibe so far: Kenny G meets Enya, but that was only the opening track. I hope this isn't the kind of album I don't get it yet everyone else swoons over it. So far, it's so so. I don't think Adam Fenton brings it like Timothy Wiles does.

Now I'm scared... But I choose to trust that Ant wouldn't pick it if that was all there was to it.

I gave this one a "meh." I'm not a fan of techno to begin with so it had that going against it from the start. I didn't hate it but I couldn't find much about it that interested me. It sounded well produced for what it is and had a few brief, minor moments for me but overall the entire album just drifted in one ear and out the other like so many others of the genre.

4/10

Yeah, I've got to say I was bored by this too. If this is drum'n'Bass, as it says on Discogs, me no like. Hard to keep the attention, much fuss about seemingly nothing, extended versions of tracks I could have done without, a rap on one I could definitely have done without. The odd interesting track, or part of a track, but overall not something I could even see myself coming back to listen to a second time. Sorry man.

1. What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in?

This sounds like it's going to be boring.

2. What did you think of the opening track?

Not much. The intro was short and effects-laden, not much to grab my attention.

3. What did you think of the next track?

Really, not much better.

4. Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions? (see note 1)

n/a

5. Did the music (only) generally appeal to you, or not? (see note 2)

No. This sort of techno electronic music is not something I enjoy.

6. Did the album get better or worse as you listened to it (first time)?

Worse

7. What did you think of the lyrical content?

n/a

8. Did you like the instrumental parts? (see note 3)

A few bits but overall no

9. What did you think of the production?

n/a

10. Did you know of this artiste prior to listening to the album, and if so, did that foreknowledge colour your perception of this album?

No and no

11. Is this, generally, the kind of music you listen to or not?

No

12. Assuming you listened to the album more than once, on repeated listens, did you find you liked the album more, or less?

I only listened to it the once. That was all I could manage.

13. What would you class as your favourite track(s), if you have any?

Nothing

14. And the one(s) you liked least?

Didn't like anything here

15. If the album in question is a debut, did that fact allow it, in your mind, any leeway, and if so, was that decision justified or vindicated? (see note 4)

n/a

16. Are you now looking forward to hearing more from this artiste, if you have not heard any of their other material?

No

17. Were you surprised by your reaction - positive or negative - to the album?

Not really sure. Wasn't too happy to see the drum'n'bass tag though

18. Did the album end well?

Well, as I said before of another album, it ended, so that was good.

19. Do you see any way the album could have been improved?

Not really. It's probably a great album, just not for me. I don't enjoy this sort of music so I can't see any way it could have changed to accommodate me.

20. Do you think the album hung together well, ie was a fully cohesive unit, or was it a bit hit-and-miss?

I honestly don't care

That's more like the excitement level rather than the type of music.

I beg to differ. How can you not like Tracey Thorn on 'The Tree Knows Everything' or the cruisy title track? This isn't some generic techno: it explores a variety of styles outside its core genre and explores some fairly compelling melodic territory in the process. I don't know why you're such a stickler about something like this yet can praise comparatively abstract hip-hop or generic K-pop.

Medium - Adam F  —  Colours. The story behind the best drum ’n’ bass album of the 90s
