Huh? He didn't use Drop D which is where just the low E is tuned down.

He was famous for using alternate tunings though, the most notable ones being - with one song example:
DADGAD - Kashmir
DGDGBD - That's the Way
EAEAC#E - In my Time of Dying
DGCGCD - The Rain Song
CACGCE - Friends
DADGBD - Going to California
He did actually use Drop D tuning in probably only two songs one of those being the instrumental Moby Dick. Check Drop D Tuning on Wikipedia. The grunge bands copied Led Zeppelin with that.

Yup. Other song examples are Spoon Man, Black Hole Sun, Dear Prudence, and Aenima. It's in my post for Going to California.
