MB Bowie Classics: "Hours"

The final album from the twentieth century for Bowie. Seems to have been something of a flop, commercially. Of course, that could be bad, or it could be good.

Very adult contemporary in feel, but that's not necessarily an automatic disqualification. Odd how his voice sometimes sounds like it's aged 15 years since the last album. Just something about his delivery, I guess.

The album starts out pretty slow, but it fortunately turns out to not be an entirely bloodless album. "The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell" kicks some butt and several other tracks also have some energy to them.

Still, this album seems like I could remove some songs for a smoother experience. I'm maybe not really that taken with it as a whole. Several of the songs are quite memorable, but they tend to drag on a bit and after Earthling, this album feels a bit like a party pooper. Some of the production details also make it sound a tad sterile, but I like the album more than I thought I would.

3/5.

Could go higher with repeat listens, but I'm only finding time for one listen of this album. I want to catch up to some things so I can get back to listening to some albums that I want to review for my journal soon.

EDIT: "New Angels of Promise" is my favorite track off this album.

Another one without flaws, totally love it. From the first track I was drawn in, and it just never flagged in quality once so far as I can see. Odd to read that this was actually written in conjunction with/as the soundtrack to a video game, but that's Bowie for you. Love "The Pretty Things are Going to Hell" and "Seven" and, well, everything here really. Another 5/5 for me (probably should have handed out more of these earlier).

This one definitely has an adult-contemporary sound for the most part. Only three songs really stood out to me; "Seven" which sounds like it could've been written for one of Bowie's early 70's albums, "What's Really Happening?" which would've fit right in on "Heroes", "Lodger" or "Scary Monsters", and "Brilliant Adventure" which could easily be a song from one of the instrumental sides on "Low" or "Heroes."
Other than those three, I found the album rather forgettable.

3/5

This album isn't quite as good as Earthling and nothing really stands out. It's kind of bland overall but it isn't especially bad and is better than the earlier nineties efforts pre-Earthling. Favorite tracks are Something In the Air and the Pretty Things Are Going To Hell (nothing to do with the Pretty Things rock band I assume? It's a joke, son). Anyway, pretty mediocre but not terrible.

5/10 (The Word has spoken :D)
