MB Bowie Classics: "Heathen"

Other than the last two in his career, this is the only twenty-first century Bowie album I've listened to. I seem to remember really liking it. I did a review on it at one point. I know, nobody cares. :(

It's pretty interesting to listen through even his late era stuff for me, since I don't really have any more of a connection with his 70's stuff than his 90's stuff or any other decade.

David Bowie: Heathen

I can definitely see why this was hailed as a comeback album for Bowie. The songs are generaly very strong and there's some interesting, subtly varied instrumentation and production details on the album. I like Bowie's vocal performances on this album a lot. Several of the songs are probably going to be some of my favorites in Bowie's entire catalog - given enough time.

Like my favorite songwriter and vocalist, Tori Amos, Bowie is starting to mature rather gracefully - both as a singer and as a songwriter. If the last few albums can round off his career in a convincing manner, then my opinion of Bowie's discography will mirror that of my opinion of Amos' discography: The latter day albums are generally more refined and well written and as such my favorite era of the artist.

I have to catch up with some stuff here and, admittedly, I have to listen to some latter day Bowie a little more (I've heard every album at least once, but the memory... :laughing:). Anyway, I remember really liking Heathen. It's probably his best album since Scary Monsters, maybe even Lodger.

Not a huge amount to add to my review really. Another great Bowie album, and given that I know TND and Blackstar are also great, that means that if Reality is up to snuff then the last portion of Bowie's discography is in good hands. Favourite tracks here: "Slip Away", "Slowburn", "I Would Be Your Slave", "5:15 The Angels Have Gone", though I could do without the Neil Young one and as for the Legendary Space Cowboy, well... reminds me of those seventies cop shows. It's not bad but it's woefully out of time. Can't you just see those cardboard boxes fly as a Dodge Charger howls down narrow back alleys in pursuit of the bad guys, the cops leaning out the window, coffee cups going flying as they snarl phrases like "look at that turkey go!" and "The DA will have your badge for this, you know!" :laughing:

Not really a bad track on this though. Happy to give another 5/5.

Another Bowie album with an adult-contemporary sound. Unlike the previous one, though, this was a snooze-fest for me from beginning to end. Nothing here interested me in the slightest and the entire album bored me.
Not awful, just bland.

Okay, I gave this album a second listen and I was tempted to say maybe I was premature in my vote. Maybe I should have given it a five, but then there is the occasional track that doesn't quite do it for me. Overall, though, this is a very good piece of work. You can hear some of the bite going back into Bowie and it shows in several songs here. Favorite tracks are Cactus, Afraid, and Everyone Says Hi. Not a perfect album but certainly the best since Lodger, and this time, that is really saying something.
