The Regrettes

This teen girl group really impressed me last year with their debut album. Lead singer Lydia Night has a bit of a potty mouth (they're all teenagers), but it's great punk/new wave. A favorite of mine from last year.

2016's Guppy by Charly Bliss is one of my favorite albums of the 21st century. It's a power pop/indie pop album that sounds like a cross between Weezer and Veruca Salt.

Sopor Aeternas and the Ensemble of Shadow
Genre: Darkwave/Gothic Rock

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopor_...ble_of_Shadows

From what I can see, Sopor Aeternus (eternal sleep) is the brainchild of one person, singer and multi-instrumentalist Anna-Varney Cantodea, who seems to work with a variety of musicians on different albums. Their music is characterised as neoclassical, darkwave and gothic, and is rooted in Renaissance and baroque tropes. Anna-Varney themselves (the artist is gender neutral) appears to be an isolationist, never performing live, with much of their material instrumental, though they do sometimes venture off the dark, solitary path into the garish lights of popular/commercial music, always applying their own particular twist on any song, as below, with this weird cover of a Jim Steinman song.

and this even weirder, almost eight-minute version of Lionel Ritchie's "Hello"!

But yeah, much of their stuff is more like this:

I heard The War On Drugs on a local alt rock station and was instantly mesmerized, so I bought their "A Deeper Understanding" album, which is actually the first digital album I've ever bought, and was only slightly annoyed by 2 of the tunes on it that seemed like filler. Surprisingly, I really dig Adam Granduciel's grittiness on his guitar leads, which are simple but effective contrasts to the beautiful soft soundscapes that make up a lot of the band's signature sound.

I haven't dug into much else of their stuff, but here's some notables off the album:

I heard Lost in the Dream and, like you, was really impressed. I got the new one, but have yet to listen to it. Must put it on the list. The long, long, lonnnnnng list...

I'm re-listening to it now after a few months and it's a pretty solid album.

Great modern (as in actually new sounding!) jazz fusion from Strobes and Physics House Band
