Fuck's not boring.

grindy 07-20-2018 09:54 AM

Possibly the ****tiest genre ever.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-20-2018 09:56 AM

the bad stuff is really boring and there’s just no need to ever listen to it

but ofc there is good **** out there if ya look hard enough

YorkeDaddy 07-20-2018 09:59 AM

I dont even know what classifies as indie rock and what doesn't

Like I've seen bands like My Bloody Valentine classified as a subgenre of indie rock. It goes without saying that they have put out some pretty killer material

My favorite band of all-time, The Replacements, is found in the "origins" section on the Indie Rock page on Wikipedia. Obviously I think they're fantastic

But then there's of course crap like Bright Eyes or Death Cab for Cutie and all that nonsense. I just feel this thread is too broad

It is, but then so is the hip-hop one. And the prog one. And the classical one. I don't know enough about indie rock to know the different subdivisions of it, the subgenres. If you want to suggest one or more, I can pencil them in for future threads, unless everyone's already bored enough by the inclusion of indie rock as it is?

The Batlord 07-20-2018 10:14 AM

The only people who like indie rock as a genre are boring, milquetoast, white people because it's made by people so bland that they can't relate to anyone else.

MicShazam 07-20-2018 12:38 PM

Like indie in general, or when applied to pop or whatever, it's very broad. I can't really say anything about it that wouldn't be a crude generalization.

grindy 07-20-2018 12:43 PM

Generalize crudely or **** off from MB.
You've been here long enough to know how this works.

Janszoon 07-20-2018 12:44 PM

The blandness is what sucks about this genre.

Yeah I know. All MB'ers are terrible people.

Justthefacts 07-20-2018 03:01 PM

My formative years was nothing but indie. Modest Mouse, early Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Bloc Party, that whole NY scene in the early oughts. Plenty of trash, especially nowadays, but quality records have been made under this umbrella term.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-20-2018 03:53 PM

modest mouse ****in rock

A Trump loving, beaner hating, capitalist chearleader such as yourself should be denouncing indie while praying to an altar to Toby Keith.

This explains to a T how backwards you liberals are. First of all, I've never listened to Toby Keith and I don't plan on it ever. Country music in general is back country hick music that's 100% gay.

Second of all I only hate gang banger beaners and I'm happy to see them deported. I am a trump supporter yes you managed to get that right. I'm not a cheerleader, but I do think capitalism is the greatest system ever invented.

and yes Modest Mouse is my shiiiiiit.

The Batlord 07-20-2018 04:17 PM

This is why you get beat up at the rallies. Among other reasons.

YorkeDaddy 07-20-2018 05:03 PM

Being anti-Trump means you’re a liberal? Man isn’t it great how we take dozens of ultra-complex problems, put one of two solutions for each problem in column A or column B, then force every citizen to decide on either the entirety of column A or column B? What a logical ****ing system

Difference is you have the capacity to be reasonable and learn even if it didn’t really happen in this case, I’ve seen it happen before

JTF is just JTF, he’s got issues and he’s clearly not going to change.

Like a few AM tracks and same for Blur. There's not a lot in this genre for me though.

Sonic Youth was, among other things, indie rock.

It's a pretty damn broad term.

PJ Harvey as well, and she's damn cool.

Anteater 07-21-2018 09:14 AM

Indie rock is pretty much any rock band that wasn't signed to a major label tho. That means even the likes of Marillion or The Residents or Frank Zappa could classify as "indie".

From a position of ignorance, what sucks for me is that Indie seems to be defined by what it isn't, not by what it is, so it's difficult to work out it's characteristic sound. Also, the term "Indie" suggests to me that you'll hear something way out of the mainstream, something unbridled, innovative and eccentric. In that respect, everything "indie" that I've heard so far has been a disappointment, and I'm beginning to suspect that "indie" is a euphemism for "second rate." ( Happy to be proven wrong on this btw. )

The genre is inherently ambiguous imo, there's something for everybody under the umbrella. Self-proclaimed indie rock is typically not very interesting because the bands make a show of their credibility as opposed making better music.

Here's a list of artists

I no longer look down on prog rock as a whole but haven't listened to enough to refocus my derision.

Goddamn if I don't listen to most of these records. Upon first glance I see classics.

Built To Spill, Pixies, Strokes, Pavement, Interpol, The National, Yo La Tengo. This "genre" gets too much hate.
