Am I the only one who is starting to get sick of "classic" pop/rock?
 

As much as I like the stuff, and think it's really good stuff, and likely will be the best pop music ever made in the history of pop/rock music, the last year or so I'm actually starting to get really sick of the stuff. Not necessarily the stuff I listen to (though, even some of that I'm starting to give a long overdue rest), but all the "hits" you hear when you go into the supermarket. Or a department store. Or a coffee shop, or any other public place where they play music (but especially the supermarket). Pop/rock from the 60's through the 80's, invariably. I mean, how many bloody times do people want to listen to Journey's Don't Stop Believing before they get sick of it? Or Careless Whisper by Wham! I mean, some of this stuff isn't really good enough to still be playing 30-40 afterwards anyway, IMO, but it gets relentlessly played and played and played, anyway. Are they still gonna be playing this stuff in the supermarket 50 years from now?

When are they gonna give this stuff a bloody rest?? Enough already. I'm starting to long for the days when they played elevator music in the supermarket. Or, nothing at all. Heck, I can't even remember what, if anything, they played in supermarkets when I was growing up - I think maybe they played nothing at all.

I predict a unanimous "OMG **** yes I am" from the board.

Electronica is standing outside your window, staring at you with bloodshot eyes and a coke encrusted nose, waiting for you to notice it.

That's not the point. That's not the stuff they're playing in the supermarket.

The point is open your window already, mate. It's cold out there.

I get sick of stuff all the time. I then start listening to other stuff I like or explore something. Maybe your music pool is too limited if you feel the need to make an apocalyptic post about what happens to all of us without fanfare.

Maybe, just maybe it's time to start listening to hip hop since you refuse to listen to it. There's a whole genre of shouting at you for you to figure out isn't what you think it is.

I do already listen to a wide variety of stuff, in part because I'm getting sick of what I've been listening to for years, or decades. Lately, mostly classical music, by lesser-known composers. The last year or so, I've even been avoiding the Beatles and Beach Boys, not to mention Beethoven and a whole lot of other stuff I've (over) listened to the past years and decades.

This thread isn't about recommendations for alternative stuff to listen to, it's a rant about stuff that's getting over-played.

EDIT: - and I mean over-played in public. When are people finally gonna get sick of this stuff?

I've been tempted to start trying to get into Merzbow. :D

If they ever started playing Merzbow in the supermarket, I think I would regard that as a sign of progress! :D
