In regards to R+R=Now, I didn't talk about Justin Tyson but he's pretty much the backbone of every song and when you focus in on what he's doing it's very impressive. If he has solo work I'd be interested in exploring it.
I strongly recommend you check out Eli Keszler, whose album Stadium is my 2018 #7, if you haven’t already.

The Bad Dreamers - Songs About People Including Myself

For most of this I was thinking this sounds like bumper music for Beverly Hills, 90210. Then that song includes a Jordan Peterson speech. What an odd album.

The Reign Of Kindo (now just Kindo) have always stuck out of the musical landscape in a good way to me - ambitious, vocal-driven pop colliding head on with a technical, knotty math rock approach to composition. To that sense, they come off at times as a group with prog-rock chops who have listened to a lot of Jamiroquai and Keane, but leader Joseph Secchiaroli is such a powerhouse on guitar and vocals that it's easy to get caught up in the sheer joyousness that permeates their arrangements.

Opener 'Human Convention' serves as both a punchy mediation on the topic of permanence whilst becoming tighter and more technical as it proceeds over a 3 1/2 minute run, complete with a late 60's horn section breakdown about midway through and a conga solo. Beyond that, that album jumps between more technical, funk-oriented pieces and stuff that veers toward more a ballad-esque structure. Of the latter type of song, 'Catch The Gleam' has a cheesy but glorious melodic progression that comes straight out of mid 90's Disney soundtrack playbook (albeit with a lot more jazz elements at play). The best stuff was definitely saved for last though: 'Obsolete' is a cosmic sounding slow burner with a trip-hop twist and 'City Of Gods' is a 6+ minute freakout where they throw every sonic trick in their arsenal out in the open, culminating in some psychedelic guitar soling throughout the second half.

Happy However After endeared itself to me pretty early on but has only grown in esteem with repeated listens. Like a dessert with multiple layers, there's plenty to digest. And I'm always in the mood for seconds.

This reminds me of Stevie Wonder’s later stuff.

I hear ya bro. I guess it stood out to me over a lot of the stuff that gets tagged as "synthwave" or retrowave, mainly because it's just a good modern pop album that explores other moods and ideas outside of "hey, we're on the set of Blade Runner".

And now that you mention it, I do hear some Stevie Wonder in that Kindo album. Along with a blatantly commercial take on Snarky Puppy and some of those other jazz outfits that appeal more to contemporary audiences.

I have now officially gone through your entire list. It’s almost like glimpse into somebody’s psyche to listen to all their faves like that. My highest compliments on putting together an outstanding list of music almost all of which I would not have otherwise heard. My 3 faves are: Shmu, Mid Air Thief, and Sophie. Those three will definitely be staying in my rotation.

Thanks a ton for putting this great list together

Honorable Mention #1: George Clanton - Slide

Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Shoegaze, Trip-Hop, Vaporwave

Sounds Like: My Bloody Valentine meets New Radicals with a big dose of A E S T H E T I C S

Going to do a few more posts going over a few gems that either went under my radar or were recommended to me after December and I just didn't get a chance to check it out.

George Clanton has been on the periphery of the whole "indie Bandcamp scene" for over a decade, refining his sense of popcraft whilst simultaneously going headfirst into the world of vaporwave under the name ESPRIT 空想. This 2018 outing, Slide, is the first "serious" record he's done under his own name and it's one hell of a doozy. It touches every nostalgic aspect of early to mid 90's experimental pop & rock whilst simultaneously basking in the chilly production styles of late 00's chillwave and vaporwave artists. The result is overpowering at times, danceable, and just compelling to anyone wanting to experience a different take on the familiar.

To that end, many of the things I found that I liked about this album were traits that I observed in Lead Me To The Glow by Shmu, though this record has none of the smooth jazz / yacht rock AOR nostalgia of that album. Listening to something like 'Livin' Loose', the opening song, reminded me of that euphoric rush I felt the first time I discovered Type O Negative. Disorienting in a sense, but the way it comes together into that first melody is aces.

So for those of you wanting to experience a pop-oriented record with a genuine sense of experimental novelty at play where you'd least expect it, I'd recommend digging into Slide.

27. Tropical Fuck Storm - A Laughing Death In Meatspace

Genre(s): Avant-garde Post-Punk Space Blues

Sounds Like: The Drones, The Fall, Hawkwind, Sonic Youth, Monster Magnet, Kyuss (and quite a few others)

Whilst I dunno if these guys are technically a "supergroup" per-se, I can most definitely express my surprise just how much I revisited their debut album throughout the year. It's noisy, strange yet just indubitably enjoyable to take in a sitting- I get that engrossing feelings similar to watching a particularly interesting set of cloud patterns or a deep space documentary. Besides that killer album cover, it also has an undeniable near-but-not-quite-dance pop sensibility on cuts like the movin' n groovin' 'The Future Of History' or the sinuous, Bowie-esque 'Chameleon Paint'. Little diversions like that really add up to a sense of replayability for me...a twisted but intriguing tapestry with blistering energy to spare for a cold, listless day.

Only a couple of tracks in but so far it's a huge improvement on their last album.
