so it's probably futile but still, i m gonna do a 3rd tape :)
i think thats mostly because i dont have time (nor the desire at the moment) to write a new one. so i m going to write about an old one.
i ll give it its working title, it comes from the cover i put to it and we ll call it "red balloon"

it gets a bit more experimental by my standards but it doesnt start like that.
it starts like this:

(this is one of the rare occasions i lthink a music video is great, hence the youtube link. i absolutely dont know what i like about it.)

It seems to catch their personalities in a slice of life just came of age it’s time to be happy now kind of way. Plus that’s really cool music.

Aesop

[start of the 4th tape]

i recently wrote an Aesop Rock tribute tape.
I hope it can work as an introduction to his music but also appeal to a fan.

i ll begin the other way around this time:
First the cover and the link to the tape.

Aes Rock is my favorite hip hop artist. i tried to make a tape that could work as:

1. introduction to the artist. especially one that could work as introduction to Aesop for non hip hop listeners (or at least just casual hip hop listeners) thats mainly cuz most people i know and share some music with in any way, are not big hip hop fans.

2. a tape that a fan can enjoy. in that direction i used many non-album tracks. maybe half of the tracks are Aes Rizo appearances in other artists records.
that gave some diversity to the sound of the tape, which i liked.

i m going to split this in 3 posts:
core albums
other projects
collaborations

About Aesop's albums.
my favorite Aesop Rock records are Labor Days (2001), Float (2000) and the Impossible Kid (2016). If pressed reaaaaaaally hard i would choose Float as #1..

Then there's another couple of absolutely loved ones: None shall pass (2007) and Bazooka Tooth (2003)

I havent heard Music for Earhworms and

on the last level i have skelethlon (2012). Theres something that doesnt move me in most of Skelethlon's tracks. I think that maybe Aes wasnt ready to handle doin' all of the production for a full length. He definitely*was ready 4 years later......Still i think that his best tracks are produced by Blockhead.

I choose 1-2 tracks per album and none from skelethlon. Not that it lacks good tracks, i could easily use the closing track "gopher guts" p.e.
I just wanted to keep the tape <1 hour, to use many collaboration tracks that i love and to represent all of his record-collaborations who are going to get addressed in the next post.

 agree with all of this. Could never get into None Shall Pass though, the production is just too cheesy. Blockhead's classical driven production on Float makes it the standout of Aesop's career. What are your thoughts on Bestiary?

at the beginning of"Basic Cable" i can almost literally visualize the bow scratching the string. is one of my favorite pieces in there (and they aint few)

Bestiary is, if i havent missed something, the only other (except "music for earthworms") Aes album i dont have an opinion about. must've heard it 1 time only- no reason, it just slipped*out.*

Are you gonna eat that? on the other hand i think is great.
*gonna talk about that in the next post [read when i have more time :)]

whats your opinion about Bestiary?

Frownland 11-19-2019 01:38 PM

Are You Gonna Eat That? is awesome but I like Bestiary more. Rob Sonic keeps Aesop Rock from getting too overwrought, as one does, and they both bring great performances that make up for a really engaging and fun album. The skits are annoying as hell though.
