Best Selling Music Artists 1969 - 2019

I didn't really know where to put this, so if someone knows a better spot, by all means move it. It's a lot of fun to watch.

That was cool.
Man, The Eagles Greatest Hits albums sold like CRAZY for a while there.

Plankton 11-12-2019 10:14 AM

I didn't realize how much Eminem dominated the early 00's. Then you see Lil Wayne and Jay Z follow that and Rihanna's like "scuze me mother fckers, comin through". lol

And freaking Garth Brooks in the 90s. Dude's ahead of Elvis Presley as the biggest selling solo artist in the USA with ~150 MILLION!! albums.

Anyone care to guess with artist/band that showed up in that list never had a #1 album their entire career?

The Batlord 11-12-2019 12:56 PM

Who the **** was buying all those Celine Dion albums?

Frownland 11-12-2019 01:02 PM

Based on this video, popular music never recovered from the mid-80s, completely self-immolated in the mid-90s, turned into a game of hot potato between 15ish mediocre artists in the mid-oughts, and stayed there.

The Batlord 11-12-2019 01:22 PM

Did you notice the way the numbers for all the artists skyrocketed in the last decade? Drake was murdering Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.

What else have you contributed besides baseball players?

YorkeDaddy 11-12-2019 01:29 PM

Shocked at how dominant Rihanna was for a while.

Interesting discussion: you can pause the video at any time to create a set of 10 artists. What are the best and worst sets of 10 you can create within the video

Re-mastered Greatest Hits CDs from classic artists who were huge on vinyl made up a very large amount of sales for a while.
Eagles, Queen, Elton John, Beatles, etc.

John's Greatest Hits has sold 17 million copies!
Eagles are 40+ million!!!

Black Francis 11-12-2019 01:47 PM

Ahh ok.

Seeing that 80s battle between madonna and mj brought back memories. Seeing nirvana in the 90s too but then i saw guns n roses surpassing them and i got mad.

The Batlord 11-12-2019 01:50 PM

And how was Elvis so consistently relevant? Did people really care that much when he was fat in Vegas?

Black Francis 11-12-2019 01:58 PM

Thats cus Elvis was dope af boi

Well, there's this.

Another artist that benefited from re-issues on CD. Dude had billions of songs to choose from and the estate was very good at packaging them in sentimental packages.

The Batlord 11-12-2019 02:07 PM

You say CD's but at least according to the video he was switching top spot with the Beatles and Led Zeppelin well into the 70s and took forever to fall off the list.

CDs make up a large portion of his total numbers.
Anyway, between 1968-1977 the guy was still big and selling consistently.
Then the planet earth stopped spinning the day he died. When it started up again the sales went nuts.

Yeah but she stayed on the chart like a wart for years. She's 250 million albums. How is that possible? White middle class husbands need to start keeping a tighter leash on their women folk.

Trollheart 11-12-2019 02:33 PM

Hell, didn't Elvis have a number one (not just a hit, but a number ****ing one!) long after he was dead? How can you rate such popularity? Can't think of anyone else who managed that. There probably were a few, but this one sticks out in history to me.

It was a #1 hits compilation. The Beatles hit #1 decades after disbanding with the same type of package.

No I'm talking about a number one single. "Way Down"?
And the Beatles may have been disbanded but they weren't dead.

Bee Gees were massive the second half of the 60s but got overshadowed when AOR radio took over.

And then disco.........
