I can think of two off the top of my head:
1. The Black Crowes This band always seemed like it was trying to make the classic rock dog do new tricks. I enjoy "My Morning Song" (based mostly off a live version I heard), "Revival" and one or two others are all right, but they usually come up short to my ears. I have to admire the effort, though. 2. Rory Block No, African-Americans aren't the only persons capable of making good blues based or influenced music (check out Ghalia Volt, especally her one woman band efforts). And Ms. Block does have one tune I really enjoy, "God's Gift To Women", which puts macho jerks in their place. But overall, her music seems to confuse earnestness with passion. Got many of those. Sparks, for one. Not my thing but a perfectly respectable outfit.

Bob Dylan. Every song of his that I've heard covered by someone else sounds far more interesting and listenable to me than his original versions.
The Band. Another one of those groups that get a lot of praise but I just don't find them particularly interesting or exciting. I agree with The Black Crowes. Though I saw some video of a show they did where they backed up Jimmy Page playing Led Zeppelin songs and I thought they did a great job as his backing band. Ditto for Sparks. |

Yep, Bob Dylan.
I guess for me it comes down to the media (I'll include the RnR HOF) telling me how great somebody is. Sometimes, I just don't get it. I'll start with two hall of famers that receive avalanches of accolades; The Velvet Underground and Patti Smith. I find it difficult to make it through an album...and I've tried. Oddly enough, I find Television absolutely enchanting and they are easily one of my top five favorite bands. I'm now treading into overrated territory but MC5 is on that list. The proto-punk-prog mix doesn't work for me on any level...except for Kick Out The Jams. I've never seen a band get so much mileage out of one song.

Another similar band for me is 'Blue Cheer.' Their cover of "Summertime Blues" is the only song I can remember by them. Another band where their music doesn't make much of an impression on me. |

Merzbow. I mean, I can get behind the idea of any kind of music easily, but I think Marsbow largely just set the standard for better noise artists with less monotony... at least until the collabs came out. And then bands like Full of Hell took on whole new personas.
