Discoveries

Huh, I don't know. Post music from any artists you've discovered recently. Or even less recently. Tell us about them, see if others can get into them. At a minimum, I'd suggest genre/sub-genre and maybe "sounds like" in the way Anteater does his "put on a playlist with". Or not.

Nils Petter Molvær

Norwegian jazz trumpeter and considered a pioneer of nu jazz/future jazz (blending jazz with electronic stylings and other genres).

Not sure if I dig this guy's stuff yet or not - but that wasn't a requirement in the original post. Compared to most jazz fusion, or hell, even bebop, this stuff is pretty tame in comparison.

I'd compare this kind of music to Miles Davis' 1980s output, e.g. Decoy, Tutu

John Grant.

When I first came across his album in one of my threads I assumed from the picture I'd be dealing with either a country or heavy metal album. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be frothy synth-pop! Since then I've become a real fan. What does he sound like? Hard to say really. Sometimes he gives me impressions of Cash mixed with a tougher John Martyn and maybe a small slice of Conor Oberst

other times he can be a kind of Visage/Human League hybrid? Hell I don't know. I just know I like his music.

One of my more rewarding discoveries in recent years is Ned Collette. He is Australian, but now I believe residing in Berlin. Sometimes he records as a solo artist, and sometimes with his band as Ned Collette & Wirewalker.

The music could be described folkish pop, Other acts that would not sound out ofplace on the same bill are Simon & Garfunkel, Mac de Marco, maybe the above-mentioned John Grant, though he does not really sound quite like any of them.

Here is one of his more synth-pop songs - "Vanitas Quack":

and here is a much more folkish song, "Grant's Farm", from his latest album:

Is Parcels a person, a band, or what?
