Bands you did not appreciate when you were younger but later realised their greatness

So I’ve been asking myself a few questions. Why do I get mostly instrumentals in my YT recs? Why don't I get tunes with lyrics? Where are they? What the hell is wrong with me?

Yesterday someone mentioned 10cc. The name rang a bell but I couldn't place them until they hummed “I’m Not in Love”, “Dreadlock Holiday” and told me to look up “I'm Mandy Fly Me”
Oh yeah! That stuff was on the radio in the 80s and 90s!

I wanted to dig to see what else I’d been missing. Turns out they were originally from Stockport and released their first single in 1972. Their early albums Sheet Music, Bloody Tourists, Deceptive Bends, How Dare You!... all sound brill, at the first listen.

3 songs at random:

10cc - I'm Mandy Fly Me (1976)

10cc - The Worst Band In The World (1974)

10cc - Une Nuit A Paris (Part 1) / The Same Night In Paris (Part 2) / Later The Same Night In Paris... (1975)

What are they, proggy rock ‘n roll with charming sometimes punky lyrics? Sounds like a eclectic band with plenty of feelings and a lot of banter and innuendo. Perfect for MB!

If anyone has any bands that they didn’t think about in ages but then came up in conversation recently and made them look them up again, then feel free to post ‘em.

Both the Beach Boys and, more recently, the Association.

I also didn't care for either of those bands when I was younger but they both grew on me over time, as well.

The 5th Dimension were another 60's group that took a while to sink in with me.

Same thing happened with me a couple of years ago, mostly because my only connection with them was "I'm Not In Love" from the 70's. I heard Rubber Bullets and it changed my whole perception.

I guess mine would be Tangerine Dream

Queen Boo 12-29-2022 06:50 PM

I was very wrong about Modest Mouse.

I'll add Badfinger to my list. They recently came up in the rock album survivor thread. I never got into them much when I was younger and I hadn't listened to anything by them in years but the thread got me interested in listening to several of their albums and I discovered a lot of good songs that I just hadn't paid any attention to previously.

Badfinger is one of the great underrated bands though I personally see them more of a great singles band than a great album band, the one exception being the original Without You which I rate right up there with No Matter What. Lot of tragedy within the band though (two suicides a few years apart).

I wonder if they were imagining something like this when they thought of their name:

Coldplay is another for me

Good post...I've come to love...B.B King- Bobby Blue Bland- James Brown- Wes Montgomery- Tina Turner.

The Yardbirds. I learned about them in my 20s within a whole "cluster" that mixed Eric Clapton, Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith... I only saw them as "one more British blues band". Only later I've listened to their discography and discovered how good and different they are.

Alice In Chains. I listened to them a lot in the 90's but they were just another band in my 90s sound track. Rediscovered them a couple years ago when Love Hate Love Live at the Moore popped up on Youtube and just blew me away. Then Mad Season Live at the Moore. I never heard of Mad Season until a year and a half ago.

10cc and Beach Boys. Correct.

A back in the eighties in my circle Queen was considered commercial junk. Today they are widely accepted as legends and I love to listen to them.

Time seems to make things better. :) I remember hearing that in 1969 some Women considered Grace Slick as a Bad girl. Not badass, just bad. But Grace Slick today is considered one of the most iconic, groundbreaking, classic, revolutionary Women in Music History. :)

Definitely Tom Petty. Once I became curious enough to actually dive into his discography, I realized he was so much more than "Free Falling."
