Listening to music in a different language
 

Hi & Thanks for accepting me in this community but i have got a question. So i have found myself listening to Russian love songs and am confused about why. I suffer from Anxiety and Depression and something about russian love songs hit different. i know a few words in russian but dont understand the language fully but i can sing along to the songs that i listen to with no problem but others are confused on why i listen to them, I try to explain it but its hard to explain something you dont fully understand. IF someone can help me with this then that would be great. Ive tried to understand it myself with no prevail.

The answer is pretty simple. If the music sounds good, then it sounds good. Doesn't matter if you can understand the language of the vocals, as the vocals can be listened to and engaged with simply as another instrument.

I don't understand spanish, but this song was my most listened to track of last year - it's a goddamn bop.

This is where the phrase "music speaks in all languages" comes from. You don't have to understand the lyric: it might be the mood, the way the person sings, the overall feel of the music or the way the words merge with it, doesn't matter. If you knew what was being sung, you might not like it so much. Just enjoy it and don't worry about what it means. Hey, you might even pick up a few words of Russian, who knows?

Sometimes I like not being able to understand the language in a song, because it lets you focus on the music.

Same here. Let's face it, this is a cure all for lame lyrics impeding your ability to enjoy a song.

Sometimes I get embarrassed for really enjoying a song when I take the time to actually listen to the lyrics. Some lyrics are really low quality but still it doesnt keep me from listening to the songs. Some people crack the code and make catchy music, plain and simple, and of course I let myself enjoy it. Or else I would be depriving myself of positive energy. That said, I connect to music in a much deeper way when I understand the lyrics, with very few exceptions.

I used Spanish and French songs during my travels through both countries to learn the languages. I did have French in school for 4 years, but it did not help much - however, listening to the songs and studying the lyrics really helped

For Spanish I can really recommend Manu Chao, because his lyrics are very simple

For French I listened to a lot of Chansons; Bécaud, Piaf, etc
