My Problem With Emo

This isn`t going to be a bitch thread so don`t get your knickers in a twist.

OK , I like to think that I have a pretty broad mind when it comes to music.I don`t really have a favourite genre of music I listen to. And yet despite all this I seem to have a problem with emo.

I`ve been thinking about why this is and what I can do to rectify this.I don`t have a problem with the concept of it so why do I not like it.

Then it occured to me.

I`ve never seen ANYONE on this forum come up with a list of SONGS that define the genre , even though i`ve asked a few times in various threads. It`s all very well giving out long lists of bands catagorising them into different genres , sub genres , sub sub genres and all the rest of it.But if there is nothing to grab me why should I care?

So anyway , I don`t care about emo , screamo , post hardcore or any of that crap or whatever you call it.All i`m doing is I challenge you lot to come up with a list of 10 SONGS that you think define emo as a genre and are the best that it has to offer of any style or sub genre there is.And in return I shall listen to them with a totally open mind & tell you what I think of them.

Is that fair?

Get the dischord box set and listen to these songs off it;

Oscar's Eye - Gray Matter
Drink Deep - Rites of Spring
Just Things - Beefeater
Circles - Dag Nasty
Money - Embrace
This Time - One Last Wish
Cake - Fire Party
Blueprint - Fugazi
Cable - Hoover
Spectra Sonic Sound - Nation Of Ulysses

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-23-2006 12:36 PM

I shall have a look at those.

I still refuse to beleive Nation Of Ulysses are emo though.

Given that I bought a couple of their albums almost 9/10 years ago That would mean I was emo before anyone almost else here. And we don`t want that.

You mean you listened to an emo band before the majority of the posters here. Most of these early bands don't consider themselves emo bands, just bands playing some punk music and that's really how it should have ended.

One problem that I have with Circle Takes The Square is the fact that the lead singer(and I use that term loosley) sounds like a demon. I downloaded the song "Crow Quill" and I thought that the devil himself was speaking to me through the speakers. I don't get how people can listen to it. A scream every once is a while is ok, but when an entire song is just some guy with a sore throat singing the whole time, I find it difficult to listen to.

Uh the whole song is some guy with a sore throat singing? What about the female vocals in it? and how about at 40 seconds, is that also sore throat singing (you said the entire song)?

Not tha song in particular. That song is the one where he sounds like a demon.
Other of these "post hardcore/metalcore" bands.
For example, Necrophagist, i got the album off RAR.
They guy sounds like that the whole time. Although I do love the CD because the guy is so good at guitar

hiu 02-23-2006 09:11 PM

Necrophagist is a death metal band. Someone should introduce these people with virgin ears to Cripple Bastards.

Well I wasn`t being totally serious there.

Anyway i`ve heard the 10 you suggested, this is what I think .....

Oscar's Eye - Gray Matter - Not bad , kinda reminds me of the Buzzcocks which is no bad thing - 7/10

Drink Deep - Rites of Spring - Reminds me a bit of The Fall in some ways but the singers voice gets on my nerves - 5/10

Just Things - Beefeater - Maybe it`s just me but this to me sounds like a Motorhead song at the start & then goes all funky, pretty good - 8/10

Circles - Dag Nasty - Sounds like it could have come off Iron Maidens debut album only with a not so good singer , not bad probably would have liked it a lot more 10 years ago. - 6/10

Money - Embrace - At least they`re better than the British Embrace , not keen on it but I don`t hate it either - 4/10

This Time - One Last Wish - Very much like The Fall , even down to the vocalists delivery ,pretty good - 8/10

Cake - Fire Party - Not that keen on female vocals on this type of song, found it rather grating - 2/10

Blueprint - Fugazi - I`ve heard Fugazi before & didn`t think much to them , they still do little for me - 2/10

Cable - Hoover - Very remincent of Pere Ubu , as i`ve been listening to them a lot lately thats no bad thing - 7/10

Spectra Sonic Sound - Nation Of Ulysses - Got it ,in fact it`s one of my favourites by them anyway 10/10

Now for the next list

hiu 02-24-2006 03:45 PM

Looks like you don't think much of Ian Mackaye :).

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-24-2006 03:46 PM

I have a minor threat album gathering dust somewhere

hiu 02-24-2006 03:47 PM

Fuck Ian Mackaye in the words of a Poison Idea album. We have pretty similar tastes so I was pretty sure on which ones you would like and which ones you wouldn't.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-24-2006 03:50 PM

I have quite a lot of Poison Idea

You`ll not going to be telling me they`re lard emo are you?

hiu 02-24-2006 03:51 PM

Nope, they are just a hardcore punk band.
