Hardcore Punk

Other than indie/experimental music I've always had soft spot for hardcore punk. I am completely out of touch with it now, though. Completely. Can anybody help get me back on track? Which bands should I know about, and who are the most well renowned and regarded among fans these days? Are there any stand-out albums I should check out? And so on and so forth...

Stop It!! "Self Made Maps"
Orchid "Dance Tonight, Revolution Tomorrow"

acratertocoffin 05-01-2007 01:52 AM

Nakatomi Plaza - Unsettled

lighter hardcore punk with indie/experimental influence

sleepy jack 05-01-2007 02:08 AM

the Blood Brothers "Burn Piano Island, Burn" is a good one too.

xcult_classicx 05-01-2007 03:59 AM

listen to the Dedication and Sex Positions, it might do the trick

can_i_say 05-01-2007 04:40 AM

good melodic/youth crew styled stuff

Go It Alone - The Only Blood Between Us
Ignite - Our Darkest Days
Crime In Stereo - The Troubled Stateside
Ambitions - Question

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 05-01-2007 11:52 AM

Converge - noisy hardcore with metal influences.

Jane Doe, You Fail Me, and No Heroes are all good, and I'm quite sure the older stuff is too, but I haven't heard as much of it.

Rainard Jalen 05-01-2007 05:52 PM

Out of interest, in what sort of regard are Suicidal Tendencies generally held by hardcore fans?

xcult_classicx 05-02-2007 02:17 AM

crossover thrash?

can_i_say 05-02-2007 05:52 AM

Good band, lame image.

They have had periods of hardcore, crossover and metal. I guess crossover thrash would be the best label for them.

xcult_classicx 05-02-2007 06:52 AM

anybody up for DRI, SOD, or Nuclear Assault?

bardonodude 05-02-2007 11:26 AM

a lot of the bands you guys are listing arent hardcore punk. I think Rainard means hardcore punk from the 80's. Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, Minor Threat, The Virus, Descendents. Fresh Fruit, Rotten Veggies is a classic Dead Kennedy's album. Also Husker Du is sweet. Zen Arcade. Old Descendents like ALL and Milo Goes To College are classic as well.

bardonodude 05-02-2007 11:26 AM

DRI is awesome

acratertocoffin 05-02-2007 12:26 PM

I'll upload their Dealing With It is anyone wants it.

Well that's not the impression I got from his post, using phrases like "these days" and "out of touch."

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-02-2007 12:47 PM

And he didn't even mention Poison Idea.

idiot :(

xcult_classicx 05-02-2007 06:17 PM

Minor Threat, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth Of Today, Bold, Brotherhood, Floorpunch, Up Front, Shelter, Cause For Alarm, Shutdown, that kind of hardcore?

Good Clean Fun =)
Between The Wars is sexy too.

can_i_say 05-03-2007 07:19 AM

Listen to Dag Nasty, old Lifetime, Civ, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, DOA, Articles Of Faith.

Avoid Hatebreed, Terror, or any similiar sounding bands.

xcult_classicx 05-03-2007 07:29 AM

what do you think of Trial?

I couldn't agree more. They aren't exactly what I think of when I think "hardcore punk" but anyone who enjoys music should listen to the Blood Brothers, and Burn Piano Island, Burn is definately their best CD.

Also, INDK were a pretty good hardcore punk band. Their only CD is "Kill Whitey!" but their are some other songs from EPs, demos, and such floating around.

I also like a lot of the newer hardcore that kids these days are splitting up into every conceivable genre (metalcore, mathcore, deathcore, etc.) but that stuff is quite a bit different than the original hardcore punk. Still good, though.

Double kick pwns your face.
Just kidding, but I still love double kick bass. It can be overused, though, and often is.

I like the Circle Jerks a lot, one of my favorite 80's punk bands. I might even like them more than Black Flag, because Keith Morris is probably my favorite Black Flag singer.

I haven't been able to listen to Bad Brains since I heard a lot about them being homophobes. Although it might be unfair since I don't know for sure. However, I would never listen to a band that I know is homophobic, because thats just ****ed up. Just like I don't listen to racist bands.

Also, the Misfits aren't the hardestcore, but they are still probably my favorite band of all time. Just avoid post-Danzig albums.

Well unfortunately, the Reggae/Jamaican culture has a tendency to be homophobic. My roommate is right off the boat from Jamaica and in his town, homosexuals are routinely beaten to death in the main streets.

Alexander the Grape 05-13-2007 06:01 PM

Thats a sad thing to hear. Unfortunately humans in general have a tendency to be homophobic, thanks to age old religious dogmas and intolerances.

xcult_classicx 05-13-2007 11:43 PM

i'm Christian (well, Catholic, really) but i'm not homophobic

sleepy jack 05-14-2007 05:11 AM

Because you touch little boys.

xcult_classicx 05-14-2007 07:52 AM

you want forgiveness? go get a religion!

spiderman is soooo emo

Alexander the Grape 05-14-2007 09:54 PM

I also know a number of Christians who aren't homophobic (not around here, though), just as I'm sure there are members of the many other religions with homophobic scriptures who are not homophobic.

Anyways, this is really off topic, so I'll get on topic:
Bigwig's newest cd "Reclamation" is pretty hardcore, and totally kicks ass. Their earlier, popier stuff is also great. Just a great band in general.
