Help:[

Dear Netizens of MB,

Recently, my band [The Greatest Pinball On Earth!] acquired a show in downtown Orlando [where we are from]. The booker said its cool and everything, so we started promoting, because we needed to have 20+ people there.

This morning, after promoting up a storm last night, the booker emailed me and said the venue owner doesn't want us to play because we scream. Us boys in The Greatest Pinball all like that one genre of music called Post-Rock, so we always try having a certain level of Post-Rockery in our music. So the first thing I said to him was "We can play instrumental." He said yes. Does this lower our integrity if we do it? Should we even do it? It kind of sucks that we cant scream at all, but oh well:/

1, Yes.
2. No.

Since when did a venue owner decide how you play your own music?
Tell him to fuck off.

I really want to, trust me I do. We just need to start playing venues, and get out of the strictly house show mentality. But you're 100% right.

right-track 12-02-2007 11:40 AM

Are you the only band on that night?

So far, yes. They are still looking for bands to play. They usually have really horrible alternative rock bands there, so we'd probably get stuck playing with someone like that.

right-track 12-02-2007 11:51 AM

Here's what a Mancunian would do...turn up and set up your equipment like usual, wait your turn and then when you get up to play, explain to the audience that the venue owner has asked the band not to scream, but to play instrumental instead.
Then scream your bollocks off!
Even if you get kicked off, think of the bigger picture.
The amount of new people wanting to see you play again will double and it'll do your rep a world of good.
Far better than compromising your band.

xcassiusx 12-02-2007 11:59 AM

Go ahead and scream if you want. They'll most likely just cut the power. Keep going if you want, and hopefully they don't have security or thugs to kick you off. If this is all worth while for you, do it.

This is the correct answer.

tyrannobear 12-02-2007 12:03 PM

Yeah, that seems like something we'd do usually. I'll talk that into consideration and let you know how it goes.

Without realising it, he's given you an opportunity money can't buy.
A defining moment.
Take it.

alliteration 12-02-2007 02:55 PM

yeah, thats what I would do. I would play anyhow under the premise you would not do vocals, and then scream your heads off anyhow. Plus, its the "punk" thing to do. Give the big middle finger to the man. haha.

tyrannobear 12-02-2007 03:09 PM

Oh. my.ajdsfhjadhj. goodness.

i'm pretty sure we're playing with this band.

I agree with everyone and if people respond well you'll make the owners feel like dicks. So I guess you don't have anything do lose.

And I checked you guys out a little while ago because Stephano Ponce is a cool guy.

tyrannobear 12-02-2007 05:17 PM

You are correct, Stephano Ponce IS a cool guy. Man, he gets around.

THESE PUSSIES GET MY VOTE FOR THE WORST BAND EVER!!!
I listened to all their songs waiting for the "hardcore" to kick in!
Does anyone know a good lawyer? I need to sue these idiots for wasting 10 minutes of my life.

About your original question....

Open up with an instrumental song then unleash hell!
Are there many bands that scream where you live? If so you should all boycott the venue. The guy sounds like a pratt. Open up your own space for bands to play. It worked for the Gilman in the Bay Area, Koo's Cafe in Santa Ana, the PCH Club in Long Beach - and they are amongst the best venues in the world.

Good luck with the show anyway.

tyrannobear 12-02-2007 06:47 PM

Yeah, we're probably going to boycott the place after this one time. Lately (as in today), I've been looking into renting spaces and using the money gained through admissions to pay off the renting of the space. Does anyone have any history with that? I've just realized how badly the venues around me really suck, so I just want to take things into my own hands to make sure kids have a place to start other then a house.

weleasewoger72 12-02-2007 06:58 PM

These guys will help you out......

the 924 Gilman Street Project and Untitled Document

Just explain what you want to do and ask for advice. I don't know if Koo's is run by the the same kids who started it years ago but they were super cool kids who would help anyone out.

GOOD LUCK!

alliteration 12-02-2007 11:28 PM

yeah, definitely. Talk to local bands like Cheer Up and some of those over on the coast, like Gillian Carter and Cassettes on Fire...I think those guys might be of some help as well. Head over to ****ingsunshinestate.com. I swear you will find so many kids who will at least try to give you some help over there. Treymon is a cool dude. Some friends of mine were trying to set up shows down there, and I went to the boards over there and I had a few kids give me contact info for setting up shows at their places and they worked out and everything, so I know for a fact there are plenty of DIY-minded kids in the FLA who are willing to do ****.

Dizzys in the wolf 12-03-2007 09:42 AM

Make sure you get a microphone though lol cause if they expect you to play instrumental you might not get one.

It was last friday. Where were you staying in orlando?

tyrannobear 12-12-2007 07:39 AM

UPDATE
Show went alright. A LOT of our friends showed up. It was nice getting paid for once, but it wasn't a big deal to me. We played too loud for the venue, so they asked us to turn down quite a few times. They asked us to play again next week, but I'm not digging the idea. I kind of don't like having strong ideals when they clash with other band members. Specifically, playing shows for money and selling music, but whatever. thats a different story.
