have you listened to no heroes?

Alfred 10-06-2009 05:31 PM

No, all I know is Jane Doe. Is it a better idea to hear No Heroes before this?

Dr.Seussicide 10-06-2009 05:32 PM

Ummm, wow, I just listened to this track "Dark Horse" ... this is fucking good dude

in my opinion yes... this album is a lot more comparable to no heroes than anything else

i think you'll find this more enjoyable, the vocals are less harsh - by no means clean singing or anything (most of the time), but not as abrasive as on jane doe. and more true to how jake bannon sounds live, imo

i found axe to fall to be a better album than no heroes, but i would recommend listening to no heroes... well id recommend listening to their whole discog but that would take a while

not to mention they feature genghis tron on a track

all guest contributers:

* Steve Brodsky (Cave In)
* Adam McGrath (Cave In)
* John-Robert Connors (Cave In, Doomriders)
* Uffe Cederlund (Disfear, ex-Entombed)
* George Hirsch (Blacklisted)
* Brad Fickeisen (The Red Chord)
* Hamilton Jordan (Genghis Tron)
* Mookie Singerman (Genghis Tron)
* John Pettibone (Undertow, Himsa)
* Steve Von Till (Neurosis)

* "Axe To Fall" features Blacklisted's George Hirsch providing backing vocals.
* "Effigy" features Cave In's Steve Brodsky on lead guitar, Adam McGrath providing additional guitar and J.R. Connors performing drums.
* "Wishing Well" features Disfear's Uffe Cederlund performing lead guitar and backing vocals.
* "Cutter" features John Pettibone on backing vocals.
* "Cruel Bloom" features Neurosis' Steve Von Till providing lead vocals.
* "Wretched World" features Genghis Tron’s Mookie Singerman providing lead vocals.

(from wiki)

Alfred 10-06-2009 05:42 PM

Yeah, I heard about Mookie performing on here, which is one of the reasons I'm interested. I'll probably listen to both albums, because I remember liking one of the songs from No Heroes a while back.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 10-06-2009 05:49 PM

ill let you know now mookie doesnt really scream its pretty much all clean vocals that he does... so you arent disappointed like i was

Alfred 10-06-2009 06:16 PM

Thanks for the heads up. I enjoy his clean singing though, so it's all good.

bardonodude 10-07-2009 05:59 AM

i cant imagine mookie cleanly singing, ive heard a lot about this lately. havent peeped it yet. Ill try to check it out today

xcassiusx 10-07-2009 11:44 PM

Such a good album! Glad these latest leaks (portraits of past + converge) are sweet.

Didn't you listen to Board Up The House? It's filled with his singing.

clutnuckle 10-11-2009 02:45 PM

I quite like Axe to Fall. Hearing it inspired me to re-download Jane Doe and remember how amazing Converge can be.

probably best you didnt

Molecules 10-11-2009 04:39 PM

i'm a big fan of Cave In's earlier metalcore stuff and only have Jane Doe from these guys, so this might have to be a straight cop... Unless you'd recommend another album foist?

bardonodude 10-11-2009 04:46 PM

this album is ok

i said to alfred on the first page i'd listen to no heroes first, but on second thought it doesn't really matter. i'd recommend their whole discog, doesn't matter too much what order you listen to it in, though i think it'd be easier for most people to listen to their more recent stuff/the remasters of when forever... and petitioning... before their older albums, if only because the old stuff is more raw, imo more challenging to listen to

in short, go for it

Molecules 10-11-2009 05:47 PM

yeah i am on a 'caring & killing' ting right now, the metal aspects on this record seems a little more trad-thrash so far... anyways better save it for the regular Converge thread if there is one.
p.s. i don't like it when this dude sings like at the end of Jane Doe, sort of ruins the atmosphere

i wouldn't worry about it. the 2005 remaster of petitioning the empty sky combines the more traditional thrash influenced hardcore with the polish of the newer releases... well, at least more polish than the original. the first track, "the saddest day" is one of their best songs imo.

i wasn't a huge fan of the singing on jane doe either but by the end of the track it makes up for it.

Molecules 10-11-2009 06:08 PM

well this first album is halfway through now and on top of the thrash, it definitely has passages resembling older math rock i have heard (that would be err Polvo then), these guys were definitely paving the way for mathcore something wicked. you're right the polish is missing but it seems to have been a common problem when bands were finding the right production sound for these emerging genres of extreme metal. This is mah studying music for tomorrow =P

bardonodude 10-11-2009 06:31 PM

every albumof theirs has to have 2 ****ty slow tracks on it

i dont hate all their atypical songs, but cruel bloom is kind of boring and wretched world is anticlimactic.

cutter is ****ing sick despite the lame title

Kamikazi Kat 10-11-2009 08:15 PM

Having trouble finding it anywhere. PM anyone?
