Basically punk music which (most of the time) is at a slightly slower pace and is totally based around the "emo"tional lyrics.

http://www.imsoemo.com/styles.htm - This website gives a good feel for the history of the genre

At present, Emo is divided into two catagories - "Pop Emo" (bands like Taking Back Sunday) and (for lack of a better term) "Folk Emo" (bands like Bright Eyes or Dashboard Confessional).

well does anyone really know? im sure everyone can agree "emo means emotional" but there are so many different changes and alterations and opinions [at least in my world] theres no COMMANDMENTS OF EMO... and that pretty much goes for any other type of music...

I don't think you can call emo a genre anymore. It was at one time, but it's not anymore, the closest thing to a straight up emo band would be the get up kids, but they aren't really anymore. Emo is a style of songwriting, and to a certain extent musicianship. There are a lot of emo songs, but no straight up "emo" bands.
