Looking for similarity to Fall of Troy&Tool

I know 30 Years War is associated with Fall of Troy, but otherwise I've been looking and having trouble. Alot of the recommendations on last fm seem very far off, at least to me anyway. The closest I could find was Dance Gavin Dance (Whatever I say is Royal Ocean album is very good). Fall of Troy's self titled album has been the biggest find for me in a good year or so.

Honestly, though, I've always put Tool first, but looking for their power+intelligence has brought me to this genre which I seem to like. The closest I could find to Tool was Karnivool (Persona, particularly) and Isis. But Tool is on it's own, it's not possible to find something similar, I've given up on that quite a while ago. Stuff like Mudvayne is a ok attempt at imitation, but I actually cannot bring myself to like them.

Any suggestions?

As one of my fav bands, I feel like I can best help you with this :) If you like The Fall of Troy check out:

All's Well That Ends Well by Chiodos
Downtown Battle Mountain by Dance Gavin Dance
Young Machetes by Blood Brothers
Fang Island by Fang Island
Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River Between Vega And Altair by La Dispute
Mongrel by The Number Twelve Looks Like You
Kezia by Protest the Hero
Critical Meat by You Slut!

Also Thomas was in a band for a short period called The Hills Have Eyes, they only made 4 songs but they are great. Check out my blog in my sig for more on that. You probably should have posted this in the recommendation thread, for future reference.

Eh, he prolly won't come back anyway.
I never connected Chiodos and The Fall of Troy, how weird.

Thanks, there's a few in that list that I had not encountered yet. Some I did, but I'll give them another chance. I've been flipping through so many bands and have alot of difficulty finding exactly what I like.

Nah, I'll probably stick around, this seems like a good community for finding specific styles. I'll just make sure I post these in the right place next time. I wasn't sure, really, but couldnt find anything better. Chiodos came up on my searches and I tried them. I don't think it's what I'm looking for.

Lower Definition and Emarosa were pretty close hits for me recently. Circle Takes Square seems good to me, but I can't seem to adjust to the vocals. The guys sound like they're 13 or something. But the music is good.

Downtown Battle Mountain by Dance Gavin Dance is ok. It's not my favorite, but it's not the worst. They appear to have variability in their style from one album to the next.

Oh, and what happened with Fall of Troys Manipulator album, it's so weak and has no aggression. I re listened to it the other day, it's such a stylistic departure...

Anyway, if that helps, I'm still interested in more ideas.

I'm not more than vaguely familiar with Fall of Troy, but from what I heard, their instrumentation sounded like Nuclear Rabbit's. You can hear some of their work on the fan site at nuclearrabbit.co.uk .... they have a little streaming radio thing...

Jump in anywhere, I'd say, if you're trying to get a sample. I enjoy most every track. These guys are weird, though.

Chiodos is weird for me in that their first album is golden, while I can't stand the rest of their material. So maybe you'll like it anyway.

They're about to come out with a long awaited second album :)

It's the production that really killed that one, I'd say it's about half great tracks (Semi-Fiction, AMAPACP) and half of is the lead singer thinking he can sing well. If you didn't like that DEFINITELY don't get In the Unlikely Event. Way worse than Manip.

Well, i'm trying, but very few things are working for me. In fact, nothing seems to do it at all.

All's Well That Ends Well by Chiodos - This was a good album, i think you're right, and it's not dissimilar to Fall of Troy. But it doesn't do much for me. I will keep listening to it.

Alexisonfire by Alexisonfire - No, not at all. Mainstream popular sound with no balls.

Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River Between Vega And Altair by La Dispute - Briefly tried, did like some of it, hard to tell if it would last for me. Will put on my mp3 player soon.

Young Machetes by Blood Brothers - Not really
Fang Island by Fang Island - No way...

Mongrel by The Number Twelve Looks Like You - DId check them out earlier, sounded like noise to me.

Lower Definition - I like their style, but their music and lyrics do not appeal to me. It was close.

Sleeping with Sirens - no

Blood Brothers - no

Jonbenet - Mostly noise, and angry (which I like) but nothing f substance.

Dellinger Escape Plan - I like their intention, but it's almost all noise.

Circle Takes Square - I think i like what they are trying, but I don't really like it in the long run.

I gave alot of these a serious chance, and tried very hard to like them. I can't seem to do that. I guess it might help, I usually use the stuff for working out at the gym, so my only concern is what promotes a bit of adrenalin.

Strange thing, there's alot of bands that do things I like, but only on one track. One hit wonders. Probably does not help, but I'll list...

Deftones (Adrenaline album) - Root & Engine no.9
Slipknot (Subliminal Verses album) - The Blister Exists
System of a Down (self titled album) - Know
God is an Astronaut - Radau
Ultraspank - Fired
Dellinger Escape Plan (Ire Works album) - Milk Lizard
Karnivool (Persona Album) - Featherweight

Generally, Tool, Isis (Absence of Truth album), Fall of Troy, more recently some of Dance Gavin Dance. Even some of Marylin Manson and Prodigy is good.

Violent & Funky 01-26-2011 05:14 PM

I've only ever listened to Fang Island and not Fall of Troy, but based on my perceptions of what they sound like I have to ask: how are they similar at all?

Also, if you are into Tool I suggest you try Justin Chancellor's original band, Peach. Tool has covered them several times...
