If you want to save the trouble of scrolling through the 70 posts so far, let me summarize this thread quickly:
i) a dispute as to whether this genre exists at all
ii) not a Youtube Clip to be seen
iii) Elliot Smith is about the only name to be mentioned more than once

Addressing the last two points, here's the very first ES clip that turns up on y-tube:-

^ Not what I expected at all! I wonder if Simon and Garfunkel are acoustic emo too?

Oh, please. Don't mention Elliott Smith and emo in the same sentence. With that logic, they might as well include Dylan too. Anyway, melodic doesn't mean emo. I'm sure Paul McCartney might have something to say about that too.

Then again, he did write Silly Love Songs (ugh!)

^ HaHa! That's not one of Macca's best!

Upon furthur research, I've come up with Days n' Daze, whose main guy Sendejas is on record:-

Quote:

Sendejas described Days N' Daze as a "glorified acoustic emo band with some ska influences"

^ This sounds much more like the real thing. I quite like the whole rough homemade style of this song, plus interesting lyrics.

Never thought of it as a genre, but then again the more specific a genre becomes the more likely it has a smaller fan base, and the more likely it is a sub-sub- ... genre, more of a chance I haven't heard of it. I guess its evolution would be: Rock > Punk Rock > Hardcore Punk > Post-Hardcore Punk > Emotive Post-Hardcore aka Emo > Acoustic Emo. By the time you Acoustic Emo the Punk been blanched out of it - seems like.

Unless it is pointed out to me that a band or song is Acoustic Emo I wouldn't have the foggiest. WhateverDude use to play a lot of acoustic Punk in plug.dj. but I don't recall any examples from what he played. So I looked at a list and the first name that I've seen before was this band called Crywank. A band pop up on related videos on YouTube looking for Emo bands - so maybe there is a connection? I guess finding the name a bit weird/cringey made me remember it more.

I don't imagine myself exploring through the genre trying to know more about it.

^ That's the most knowledgeable, sensible post in this thread so far. Thanks Neapolitan!

I agree the band name is memorable, and quite off-putting imo, but the album title, "Yesterday is....." is an improvement, and the music appeals to me a lot. I like the guy's voice, the straightforward guitar and the kind of deliberately artless lyrics. Instead of listening to songs, it's like listening to a guy ruminating about his life. So thanks very much - I'm currently enjoying the second track:-

"Oh how rude of me to bring my thoughts into your bedroom.
Is it condescending to be so scared I might hurt you?"

Not many people sing things like that, afaik, but that's more what I expected emo to be: a kind of endless, convoluted, crippling self-analysis. Great Stuff! :thumb:

Thanks, you're often too kind with you compliments. I don't know of I deserve them. I honestly really don't know how knowledgeable I am when it comes to music, but I'm glad you like what I post.

A band I heard before (but never associated being Acoustic Emo) are The Front Bottoms. However I am not sure how Acoustic Emo they are. They might qualify cause they are listed as playing Indie, Folk Punk and Emo, at least they are on Wiki. Maybe they play in a vaguely related style. Never heard of Sailor Heart before but found on a list. I not saying they are the best, just that they're what I imagine Acoustic Emo would sound like.

^ Well, it's clear to me that you know a whole lot about music - and often in some obscure unfashionable corners too. I think that's what appeals to me about your recs.

The Front Bottoms: Raining

^ A song that starts " It was raining the day they let me out of the hospital" promises to be too emo to be true - but this song really works imo. It's not as OTT as we might imagine from the first line: it's easy on the ear with its poppy "ooh-ooh-ooh", but it still makes a clear statement of individual disaffection. A nice combination.
