People don't like certain "emo" bands like MCR and The Used because they say they're too mainstream
Why does it matter? Just because other people like them doens't make tham a bad band...

Electric Ocean 06-14-2005 11:40 AM

People don't like them because they're clearly just riding a trend wave and have no real substance. Also they use cliched love and loss lyrics which sort of grate on some people.

xbang.bang____x 06-14-2005 12:05 PM

Everyones entitles to their own opinion, so that's fair enough
But i like them and think some of the lyrics are amazing

Not to start an arguement, but it could be that they actually like the music they play and aren't "clearly just riding a trend wave". And weather a band has substance or not is really just a personal opinion. People might consider their lyrics very deep and insightful, or they may not. You can say that with any band. As I said, not trying to start an arguement, just trying to set forth some ideas...

Electric Ocean 06-14-2005 12:49 PM

Fair enough, I'm all for discussion and personal views. All I was saying though is that those bands wouldn't be where they were if "emo" (and I use the term loosely) wasn't the "in" thing. And don't get me wrong, I loved MCR's first album but I can see what they're doing and how they're being marketed.

phoenixflames 06-14-2005 12:54 PM

Sometimes it irritates me when bands get too big, too fast. To me they should earn it. Its like one hit wonders. I'm not really involved in mainstream media, so I don't really see how these bands are being marketed. I'm sure if its like anything else that money has an effect on, its sickening. I just listen to the bands who's music I enjoy. I don't really worry about their image, popularity, or fan base too much. To me its about the music.

Electric Ocean 06-14-2005 01:47 PM

Yeah those bands that get big quickly never matter anyway, once said "trend wave" crashes they're all back to where they were. You think anyone will remember The Used in 10 years time?

Well, I suppose only time will tell on that. Its totally possible that people will. Look at Green Day. Alot of people thought it was just a "trend wave", but they are still going strong. But who knows, bands seem to either have a very short life span, or ones that are too long...

Electric Ocean 06-14-2005 02:18 PM

Green Day were inluential though, at least in the beggining.

phoenixflames 06-14-2005 02:28 PM

^ To me, it seems the only way to tell if something is influencial is when you look back in history. So weather The Used will be viewed as influencial or not can only be told by time.

.angie. 06-14-2005 08:34 PM

i will remember The Used in ten years. i have all of their cd's.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 06-15-2005 01:10 AM

the people who listen to the used will remember the used in ten years. the people who listen to green day will remember them too. bands are only influential to the people that listen to them.

Electric Ocean 06-15-2005 04:52 AM

I meant that the most original bands get remembered because they become influential and other bands incorporate their style into their own music. e.g. Black Sabbath invented "doom metal" and Iron Maiden invented power metal (well more or less). When Green Day released Dookie it was something a bit different at that time and influenced a lot of the pop-punk that came after.

SpeaknSpell 06-15-2005 09:33 PM

i spose influence has alot to do with it youre right. i dont like green day at all anymore, but i liked dookie when i was 6 and i guess you could say bands like that are a catalyst to something better. tastes change and develope and hopefully you become more open-minded of different music and learn to acknowledge the skill and the work that goes into creating something original. cursive is a huge inspiration for me now and is one of my favorite bands because the sound is unique to me.

phoenixflames 06-15-2005 09:41 PM

And over time your tastes change and grow because you change as a person. Sometimes you think "Man, how could I have ever liked that band?", but at that point in your life they had meaning and importance. Thats really how songs are too. Something that really hits home now might not have nearly as much effect tomorrow.

Bands are all related at least somewhat remotely, which is how you can be "influenced" into liking a particular genre. Hence why I believe some of the bigger "punk" bands (blink-182, Green Day), can pull people into listening to better music within the genre. I don't know if any of this is making sense. I'm tired...
