A Very Large Misconception...

I see alot of posts in this forum where people say that Emo is a genre for kids who "slit their wrists and act depressed" and I just had a couple ideas on this that I would like to put forth (some more serious than others :) ).

1. If all "emo kids" slit their wrists, wouldn't emo music die because all the people who liked it (or were in bands that played it) were dead?

2. If people took the time to listen to the music they are so stereotypicly criticizing, they might realize that emo lyrics aren't all about depressed (or other mentally ill people) committing suicide.

3. I think you will find that there are many people in society who are depressed, and amazingly, they don't all listen to emo... (Wow, what a revelation...)

4. On a final point, that emo (and many other forms of music as well) is a good way for "depressed kids" to express their feelings and keep from slitting their wrists in the first place.

This is just my opinion, and I'm sure that more can be added...

Well, apparently not everyone who comes to this forum does, because otherwise people wouldn't keep believing it and posting to say its true. I do, however, agree that its a stupid stereotype (and that its just one of millions out there)...

Wherever you go, theres going to be people holding sterotypes against you. There are people on this forum who join and post once about how "emo kids are g@y you all need to stop slitting your wrists you stupid f@gs." But its not as if this forum is the only place youll hear that! You hear it everywhere. Theres nothin you can do about people like that, its just a fact of life that they're always going to be around.

I agree with what your saying. Its just sad that most people have to go through life putting others down to make themselves feel better. In this day and age, you think we could be more "tolerant" (boy, is that word thrown around alot) of each other. Saying other people are stupid does in no way, make you any better than everyone else. But I'm sure everyone already knows this...

:soapbox:

Youre right, saying other people are stupid doesnt make you any better, but they dont know that. It makes them feel better about themselves. I dont understand them, but Ive been around them for years now, and Ive accepted that fact that they hate me and that they're "better than me" or whatever. Now just if everyone else would just accept the fact that theres no changing some people, we'll be fine.
