Is Emo Dying?
 

Hello all,
I am newly registered and I would like to become a regular here. This is my first post so forgive me if it is not up to par. Anyways I have something I would like to discuss.

Do you guys think emo is dying? I mean not just as a culture but as a music genre.

I believe emo is different every decade but lately I haven't seen many emo bands. Mind you I have haven't been digging that hard but still. I think the late 90's- 2007 were the years were emo was quite popular. That's just my opinion. I know there is so many different users so there is bound to be different opinions. What do you guys think? An additional question is: What do you consider "real emo" and what's some "real emo bands"?

Well, you stated the problem, you haven't been digging too hard.

You gotta search to find the music you want. It won't just come to you.

There is certainly a decline in them, but I'll give you a few things to check out sailor.

I think this is something that people have been saying since the genre started, or at least after the 90s "boom". I don't know if it's true or not, i just know that after a while it started to seem like a lot of the new emo bands weren't all that different from mainstream ones, or at least what they were singing about stopped being interesting to me. Really, though, you should check out a lot of stuff for example from South America and Mexico. There seems to be a really active scene there (lots of , and supposedly Subir en busca del aire got back together, at least that's what i read online. Check out "Después de todo" (Acaso yo no lucho por algo? Do you really think there's nothing i fight for?). Really good lyrics and really moving music.

Honestly, I feel 'emo' isn't dying, its evolved a lot. I kinda have always argued "emo" isn't a genre of music, its a style of clothing, and an additude. I personally dress emo/ gothic, what with my band tees, tripps, dark makeup, and purple hair over my eye. Some people would say I listen to "emo" music too, because some of the stuff I listen to can be rather depressing lyric wize, but I don't really know if I agree.

"Emo" is just short for emotional, and isn't that all music? What classifies as a good song for myself is if it can make me think, or I can relate to it. One of my favorite songs, most people would hear the title or the one line of the song and be like "OMG, you're so emo for listening to this." Emotions are part of humanity, and lyrics are just feelings or thoughts poured out from whoever wrote them. I've always said lyrics are like a window to a songwriter's soul. You can find out a lot about someone from their lyrics.

I digress though, to answer your question, I defentily do not think its died. Its just changed and become more accepted. Also, something that bugs me is people assume that anyone who listens to music with darker lyrics, or dresses in dark clothing is automatically depressed. That isn't always the case. I know a lot of people who dress it -much like myself- but are some of the most cheerful people you know. Like myself for example, I'm a happy person, I don't look it on the outside because of my attire, but I am. People know when something is wrong with me, and get concerned then.

Even when the emo forum was at it's peak they were mostly talking about bands that had split up.
