Why is emo so misunderstood?

Seriously.
If you ask 10 people what emo is, 9 of them will say "it's a depressed guy who hurts himself", and 1 will say "you know, bands like Black Veil Brides and My Chemical Romance". Seriously? This stereotype and misunderstanding stuff makes it REALLY hard to find real emo music! All I find is stuff like Dashboard Confessional and Cute is What We Aim For! Neither of them are emo! I'm sick of this, and I want to know WHY nobody knows what emo is.

Are you a time traveler from the year 2003? I didn't even know mainstream emo was still relevant anymore.

What IS emo then?

Janszoon 09-23-2012 07:34 PM

I thought real emo was stuff like The Promise Ring and Sunny Day Real Estate, not crap like My Chemical Romance.

I have no idea either, and I never put much thought into it actually... I thought Emo was any music listen to anyone who had pitch black hair with fluorescent bangs and wore black baggy chain pants from HotTopics - apparently it's an off-shoot of DC Hardcore from the 80s.

Tbh the only names I recognized in that article was Bob Dylan, Mozart, Minor Threat, Husker Du and Panic! At The Disco. I'd imagined Emo bands would be something like 30 Seconds to Mars and Paramore... I don't know now.

Cool, It's been years since I closed a thread like this.

This really takes me back.
