wrong. emo has been around since the 80's. since then its been transformed from Rites of Spring and In/Humanity and reversal of man to this "new age emo" like dashboard and thrice and taking back sunday which doesnt even compare

In the end it's all music, why does it matter if it gets labelled with one word instead of another?

:usehead: i agree to some point.. like i'm into emo.. but there's different types.. like softer.. then screamo.. and i like it all. but yeah.. why are we fighting over it? that's what i don't get it.. oh well.. i'm over it

we fight about it because people don't like it when other people call themselves emo when they are not. Like if I was in a room with someone that said that they listen to hardcore emo and then said they listened to Dashboard confessional and Taking back sunday I would simply smack them in the face.

What's the point in that though? So what if they decide that a totally redundant word means something slighlty different to what you think it means? Is it really that important that it should cause arguments?

I'll bet there aren't two people on this entire site who could give me the same definition of emo, or punk, or hardcore, or death metal, or garage, or any of these trendy words used to describe every new band that pops up.

okay i'm just gonna say this i hope noone yells at me... my fav. bands are all emo.. all that i listen to is emo/screamo/hardcore stuff but if i name a band a gurantee you that someone will disagree.. so i'm just saying to get over it... noone's gonna agree w/ who is and who isn't emo so just forget about it.. it's a lot cause

People will actually agree with what is emo and what isn't. The music you like is simply not emo there is no other way to put it, and that is why people will disagree with your "emo" choices.

An emo group that I listen to is Mineral. They are emo and many people will agree with me.

Its like you are saying Britney Spears is emo and then saying that people will disagree with it. Of course people will disagree with you because what you listen to is just like Britney Spears. It is simply not emo.


Here's another example to make it even more clearer:
"Its a lost cause to debate what is rap so I say elton john is rap"
Now all the rappers will disagree with this because it is clearly not rap.

I liked Dashboard confessional's old music. However, unlike you I don't recklessly label him as emo.

So, in conclusion. Emo means one thing to one set of people, and one thing to another set of people, and absolutely nothing to me. I'd suggest closing the thread before it becomes a full scale argument, because I think as a discussion this is exhausted.

that is like saying death metal is one thing to one set of people and one set to another. Some people consider Cephallic Carnage Death Metal and others consider G unit as death metal.

Yes, but the difference is, I couldn't care less about throwing labels at bands. I find it a pointless waste of time and energy. If someone wants to call G Unit death metal, well, it's not going to kill me, same as if someone calls Avril Lavigne punk. It. Isn't. Life and Death.

well, its not that they are famous, its that they dont deserve it. they really arent punk, and even if they were.. they still just arent a good band at all.

this is like the 500th thread on this topic(clearly an exaggeration) so why do people keep posting these threads? nobody is ever going to agree because everybody thinks individually...well, most people. for example, when frost was getting whipped earlier by a few nameless junkies(which is not meant as an insult) he disagrees with everything you say because he interprets "emo" as something different to you. which then stems arguments because he gets pissed off by you guys saying what, to him, is just ****ing stupid. you cannot say that has never happened to you. that was just an example, and thankyou for your cooperation frost.
